Hutchesons' Choral Society Description

We are a non-auditioning "classical" choir, approx 60-strong, based on the South-side of Glasgow.

Our members come from all walks of life and have varying musical abilities. You don't need to be able to read music, but it helps if you can hold a tune and love sing.

While we were founded by a former Head of Music & have strong links to Hutchesons' Grammar School most of our members are not connected to the School, so don't think you need to be a former Pupil to come an join us.

We rehearse on Monday evenings from August to November and January to March. New members are always made welcome.

Introducing our new Conductor for session starting Sept 2018.... Sarika (Sarah) Skerritt.
Sarah graduated with BMus (Hons.) from the D.I.T. Conservatory of Music in Vocal Pedagogy.
Her experience singing in choirs began at the age of nine with Galway Choral Association, Ireland. It was throughout this period that she fostered a love for choral music. In 2012, she was invited to sing with the internationally acclaimed choir New Dublin Voices under the direction of Ms. Bernie S...herlock. Shortly after joining, she commenced private instruction from Ms. Sherlock in choral conducting.
During the same year, Ms. Mairéad Hurley, Head of Vocal Studies, D.I.T. Conservatory of Music and Drama, recommended her to Waterways Ireland to set up, direct and conduct a Community Choir. Together they performed at prestigious events such as Dublin Docklands Festival (2012 & 2013).
In September 2013, she was appointed Musical Director of the Rotunda Maternity Hospital Staff Choir. They took part in “Stars, Carols for Choirs” presented by Broadcaster/Journalist Ms. Miriam O’ Callaghan.
As soloist, Sarah’s repertoire includes works such as Fauré’s Requiem, Handel’s Messiah, Kodály's Missa Brevis, Pergolesi’s Magnificat and Stabat Mater.
She was invited to perform Haydn’s Nelson Mass and Mendelssohn’s Walpurgisnacht with Culwick Choral Society, Dublin.
As conductor, she directs several concerts per year. Together with choirs, she performed choral works by composers including Britten, Haydn, Mozart, Rutter and Vivaldi. Orchestral works conducted include Beethoven's 1st Symphony and Debussy's Petite Suite.
In September 2014, she relocated to Hungary in order to attend the Kodály Institute, Kecskemét. While there, she studied with the world-renowned Professor Péter Erdei and received a diploma in Advanced Choral Conducting. She completed her MA (Kodály Music Pedagogy) and graduated with distinction in 2016. During her time in Hungary, she was a member of the Új Liszt Kamarakórus directed by Dr. László Norbert Nemes.
A recipient of the esteemed Bacon-Erdei Scholarship, Sarah was invited to engage in educational research in Budapest in 2016/2017.
Currently, she is a PDGE student at Strathclyde University (Secondary Music). She holds position of Deputy Lecturer at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland (Choral & Musicianship) and is looking forward to working with Hutchesons' Choral Society as Musical Director from September 2018.
