About Inveraray Hostel

Inveraray Hostel is an Independent Hostel for independent travellers. We offer cosy, budget-friendly accommodation with heart!

Inveraray Hostel Description

Inveraray Hostel opened on October 10, 2013 as an independent, hostel. The building itself was purpose-built over 40 years ago by the Scottish Youth Hostels Association, who decided to get rid of it along with several other small hostels. It is now run independently as a not-for-profit business, with a focus on nature and community - a hostel with heart!

We offer comfortable, budget-friendly accommodation in shared dorms and private rooms, with cosy, communal facilities and an attractive garden.

Wondering where to wander?

User

Sadly, along with most other accommodation businesses, we are now closed.
Sincerely hope that we'll be able to open our doors to visitors again later in the year.
In the meantime, we still have our birds for company!
... Best wishes to all.

Plenty of time for gardening, then!
While concerns about the current situation increase, reservations decrease. We would like to remain open as usual, but we are only able to do so if we have bookings.
At the moment, Inveraray Hostel will remain open through April, but with government measures changing daily, it soon might not be possible.
... We'll keep you updated...

Local flora spotted & snapped in Inveraray (including our garden at Inveraray Hostel). All photos were taken by us during our walks - this is just a small collection of the plants we've seen! More to be added after our next wanderings.
Take a walk, take a look, take a wildflower guide, & you'll be amazed at the number of beauties hiding in the grass!

With an adventurous spirit, there's lots to discover in & around the wee town of Inveraray, as regular hosteller, Val, reveals in her blog. Look forward to seeing you here again for your birthday bash in September!

When we quit B.com, what happened?
Our sales dropped. By a whopping 54%.
We were expecting a fall in sales, but not one quite as large as this.
... Up to 2017, the hostel had not been listed on B.com & it’s availability on other OTAs was limited.
When we looked at the figures for the years prior to 2017, the number of bed-nights seemed reasonable & good enough to sustain the business. Which is why we didn't think opting out of B.com would be as harmful as it turned out to be. It’s only been 3 weeks, and sales might pick up over Summer, but we simply can’t afford to run the risk that they won’t. Which ultimately means, in order to keep our business running, we must re-list our hostel on B.com. So much for being independent.
B.com is just one company owned by the multi-billion dollar, American-owed, Netherlands-based mega corporation Booking Holdings Inc. To them, for each booking we receive from B.com, we must pay 15% of the price of the booking. And we MUST pay because they’ve done such a good job with their advertising campaigns that many wouldn’t believe your accommodation business exists if it doesn’t appear on their website.
But this is the way of the world: massive corporations swallowing small independent businesses & mulching them into a homogeneous lump. So you will find us back on B.com, with a characterless description of 'our property' & at a price we can afford.
