About Jimmy Egypts Guitar Repair Shop

An impressive and fabulous guitar shop in Glasgow's West End. We are not associated in any way with the former CC Music or its' owners. . . don't go there!

Jimmy Egypts Guitar Repair Shop Description

Who We Are
(Jimmy Egypt’s) Guitar Repair Shop is owned and run by James Cannell. It is the largest and most specialised guitar and fretted instrument repair store in Scotland. Working in the Repair Shop alongside Jimmy is Owen and Dan.

Who Is Jimmy Egypt?
Jimmy Egypt is the alter ego of James Cannell, owner of Guitar Repair Shop.

Why Jimmy Egypt?
Well my friends…that is a long and convoluted, though rivetting and extremely interesting…(to those who are interested)… story which I am unfortunately not able to divulge here. Sorry.

OK…Tell Us More About Jimmy Then!
James M Cannell BA Hons is a trained product and furniture designer with an Honours Design Degree from the world renowned Glasgow School of Art. Following graduation he established a guitar-making business along with his friend Maurice Bellando. Egypt Guitars were in business for 3 short years and manufactured a range of very high quality and originally styled guitars and bass guitars with suitable egyptian names which some say were ahead of their time. There’s more information on the Egypt Guitars facebook page or website. www. egyptguitars.com.

After Egypt Guitars, Jimmy put his degree to use working as a designer and manager in the furniture industry before an opportunity arose to reconnect with the music industry as a part of CC Music. Circa 1998, CC Music opened a bigger and better shop in Glasgow’s west end. Owned at that time by Jimmy’s friends Steve Caban and Phil Hay, they offered him a space within the shop to start a guitar repair business. Jimmy decided it was time to embrace self employment again and do something he enjoyed and was particularly skilled at…. working on musical instruments. The business has grown by leaps and bounds and now resides on the lower floor of CC Music in Glasgow’s West End. Jimmy plays in a tribute band called the Beatles Beat. It keeps his hand in on the gigging front. He says, “It’s the most enjoyment I’ve ever had playing in a band. Trying to get my guitars to sound just the way George recorded them is a fascinating science. Also, as a gigging musician, I can understand some of the issues my customers come up against in the heat of a gigging situation. I could go on to talk for endless paragraphs about my guitars here, but as I sense you’re starting to nod off, so I’ll save it for another time”

Thanks for dropping by and be sure to say hello when you visit the shop!

A Magnum is an individually designed bass guitar formerly manufactured by the Kaman Corporation otherwise know as Ovation Guitars from 1977 -1982/3. A Magnum of champagne is equivalent to two standard 750 ml bottles. By coincidence I've just finished chomping on a similarly name cho ice. I've no idea who the hairy chested bloke is in the swimwear but perhaps he's on the phone to book a refret? . . #Glasgowwestend #guitarrepair #guitar #ovationguitars #whatsonmybench #

Went to Glasgow yesterday to have my new custom built Furch guitar set up, Owen

your a star. My new guitar now sounds and plays as good as it looks. Faultless job and couldn't be happier, well worth the trip from the East of Scotland. Cant recommend these guys enough, and trust me I'm really fussy.

Thanks again to your whole team.

Peter Craig.

User

Took my Japanese Strat in with tuning/intonation issues and a few knicks to be filled in. Guitar now feels, looks and sounds excellent, and is a pure joy to play! Cheers!

User

Thanks to this wonderful place - Little Jane is back home again and plays well

User

Thanks Jimmy & staff for fixing cracked headstock and refret on my Takamine 12 string and quick turnaround! Back to playing as it should. Also for sorting out the action with a fine piece of quick fettling on my Taylor! Cheers lads!

Repaired a dirty contact in the volume and tone pots while I waited. Incredible service.

User

Pro set up on a well gigged Baja Tele. Lovely fret work and a new bone nut plus set up ... plays better than new...

User

Over the years Jimmy and his team have upgraded my Squier Silver Series

Hank Marvin Strat to near the quality and sound of a Vintage USA 57 reissue!!!

Excellent work on the refret to hard vintage spec, Kinman Pickups, Wilkinson, trem

block replacement and set ups.

Good luck to all staff on new venture!!!

User

Just had my 1989 Fernandes Strat set up by the guys and it plays and sounds fantastic. Great job.

User

Just got two guitars back from Jimmy Egypt the weekend. They did an amazing full set up and repair job on both my Gretsch Malcolm Young Signature and Levinson Blade Tele.

I knew that the Gretsch had issues with the switches and the Tele had a faulty Jack socket which they replaced and then checked and cleaned all the electrics on both so everything now works as it should.

They checked over everything and found that both guitars needed slight truss rod adjustment and both had pickups that were set at the wrong height. They added new foam bedding under the pickups and pole pieces were adjusted to the correct height for each string.

Intonation and Action etc. were adjusted to suit the heavier gauge strings that I requested and the nut on the Tele was filed to stop the lower strings popping out as they did before.

Overall they did a fantastic job on both guitars. They both sound better and play better and stay in tune better than they ever did. I wish I had taken them to Jimmy years ago.

Jimmy and his staff were very friendly and easy to talk to and make you feel like you have known them for years.

Thanks very much for a great job, info and advice.

Jimmy looks after all of my guitar needs. He knows exactly what I like a guitar to feel and play like. I always get first class service. Highly recommended!

User

Jimmy looks after all my guitars and provides A1 repairs and mods!

User

Jimmy has done a fantastic job on my 1982 Yamaha SC400 which needed a refret and new nut. The guitar plays like a new version of itself. And not a single sign of the refret despite having slightly narrower wire than the original. The guitar was overhauled so that everything works like new.

Thanks Jimmy

User

Jimmy did a re-fret and new pickups on my Japanese Strat about 20 years ago and it's still going strong. Only needed a couple of set ups and tweaks since. Have recommended to friends over the years and all have been delighted with the service. Great for advice too. Highly recommended. Looking forward to seeing the new shop.

User

Jimmy did a great job assesing and identifying the issues with my guitar. All those issues have been resolved at in plays and sounds great! On another guitar they put in a new jack socket in no time at all and I got that back with half an hour, and a coffee while I waited. I'd definitely recommend!

User

Jimmy and Dan’s advice and workmanship are the reasons that I’ve never needed to look anywhere else when I have a technician issue. I know that I’m a pain the arse with my bespoke set ups and I know that I can drive them mental at times with some of my requests, but, as Jimmy say’s “ when you walk in the shop Graham, we know that things are about to get interesting “. Brilliant works guys........always 👍

User

I've just picked up my Gibson 2008 Standard Les Paul from Jimmy after a fret dress and set up. What a great job! The frets are perfect and the guitar plays like a dream. This is the second fret job and setup you've done for me and both have been flawless. Well done guys!

User

I've just picked up my 1977 Fender Strat from Jimmy's shop,it's had the works done, full refret 6105 and new Tusq nut, full intonation set-up pots all cleaned, bridge polished and oiled, and new strings,I'm the cat that's just got the cream, my old guitar plays like it used to,like a dream, and sounds awesome,a big massive thanks toJimmy and the team, what a service I still can't stop grinning.

User

I've been going here for years and recently have had a few Travis Beans get fixed up to last another 30/40 years. I cannot recommend these guys enough.

They've also fixed work I got done from elsewhere and made my gear flawless again. It's rare in the uk to get a team with so much experience with aluminium necks which is great for me.

World class workshop with fantastic staff, it's nice to know I don't need to travel far for the best work.

User

I got myself a second hand Guild acoustic from a "chain guitar shop". Wrongly advertised model and not set up at all. Basically box shifters (nice people mind you). The action was all over the place.

Took it to Jimmy (who did my previous acoustic and Electric). He reset the bridge, Nut, polished frets fingerboard, true rod, etc etc. WOW WOW WOW.... plays like a different and far better guitar now. He has made this wonderful vintage acoustic a guitar for life. Even if you buy a new guitar, take it to this man to have it set up properly.

User

Had my Esp Eclipse set up , frets levelled and re-crowned. I cannot speak highly enough of the job the guys done, guitar plays excellent (better than i think it has ever played ) and will no doubt be back in the future for further work. Thanks again chaps !

User

Had an EKO Ranger 12 string in for what i thought was major work. Minor work the Jimmy Egypt team assured me. Great service, great guys,my son is delighted with the results CHEERS

User

Great guys, quick turnaround. An internal wire snapped in my guitar. Was fixed while I waited.

User

Big thanks to the guys for loading my Les Paul with some SD Whole Lotta Humbuckers! Amazing service as always. Work completed to their usual high standard, a quick turnaround and a great price.

User

Big thanks for the wonderful work carried out on the American Starfield which has never been right since I owned it in 1990,irrespective of the the failed repairs I did last year from a refret done in 1994.The guitar is superb.

Lesson learned ,get it done by these experts.

Thank you,

Glenn

User

Absolutely transformed my guitar - a Gibson SJ200 acoustic which sounded horrible from day one.

The guitar would never tune right, sounded terrible through an amp or unplugged and I hated it.

Jimmy did his thing and it now sounds and plays fantastic. Love the guitar now and could tell straight away it was fixed! Highly recommended.

User

'Been a client for quite a few years. Jimmy really knows his stuff. Latest project he swapped out all the PU's on my Brian May. result : AWESOME :D
