This young woman is embarking on an adventure to India for a year where she will be teaching young people with disabilities. She has been selected by Project Trust to work in social care with primary school aged children. Vicki met up with Katie recently to hear about her plans, and was pleased to donate towards her fundraising efforts. The JFS team wish Katie the very best and look forward to hearing about her work in India.

Tickets are now on sale for Highland Hearts of Gold! This promises to be a fabulous night all in support of four amazing charities - Maggie's Highlands, Marie Curie Scotland North, Highland Hospice and Macmillan Cancer Support Scotland. Vicki will be there to speak about her experience of the wonderful support provided to her by Marie Curie during her dad's illness, and her son Marcus will be strutting his stuff on the catwalk. You can purchase tickets by popping in to The Head Gardener or giving them a call or message.

Do you know that it is NHS Organ Donation Week?! Have you heard about Organ Donation Scotland or 'Living Kidney Donation'? We are a little embarrassed to say that we didn't know much about this at all - until one of the JFS team announced they were going to be giving someone the most exceptional gift... This JFS team member (who is so modest that they have chosen to remain anonymous!) will be donating one of their own kidneys to save the life of someone they've never met. Thi...s is called "altruistic donation". An altruistic donor can start a 'chain' of transplants, meaning up to 3 people can receive a transplant in a kidney sharing scheme due to the altruistic donor's gift.
We are all so very proud of our colleague and touched by this most selfless act.

We are delighted to announce our involvement with Highland Hearts of Gold - an event which brings four charities together for one cause Marie Curie Scotland North, Maggie's Highlands, Highland Hospice and Macmillan Cancer Support Scotland
On Saturday 22nd February at the Drumossie Hotel four brave ambassadors from each charity will take to the catwalk to share their stories of living with illness, dealing with grief and the celebration of life and survival. This event will h...ighlight the services available across the Highlands, helping people access the care they so deserve as well as raising much needed funds for four charities in the process.
Vicki will be speaking on behalf of Marie Curie about her personal experience of this wonderful charity who supported her in her dad's final days. Vicki's son Marcus will be there to support his mum and will take to the catwalk in memory of his grandad.
In the lead-up to this event we will be fundraising to raise as much as possible for these fantastic local charities - keep an eye on our facebook page for further information.

There really is no limit to what our skilled craftsmen can create! These designs are just a few examples of their artistry. Speak to our memorial department about how to personalise your loved one's memorial with a beautiful gilded or enamelled design.

We are pleased to be gifting a trophy to Inverness Golf Club for their Junior Summer Match Play Competition. The trophy is named the "Ian C Fraser Trophy" in memory of Vicki's late father, who was a life member of the golf club.

Did you know that the use of cords to lower a coffin at a graveside only happens in Scotland? It is a tradition that we are very fond of, and think it is a real honour to be asked to be a cordholder. It used to be that cords were handed out to the men of the family depending on relationship - with the closest male relation at cord number one. We are pleased that now women are welcome to take cords, and find that often close friends and carers might be invited to take part too.

Sarah had a really interesting visit to the Centre for Health Science this week. She was speaking to 5th Year Medical Students as part of an 'End of Life' teaching event. The session is held annually and gives students free reign to question an 'expert panel' comprising of two consultants, a junior doctor, a Macmillan nurse, a hospital chaplain and a funeral director. It always proves to be challenging and thought provoking - and, more surprisingly, good fun too!

Here are some of our new arrivals - just erected in our memorial garden. We love these beautiful blue granites and think the colour adds something a little bit different. If you are looking for the perfect memorial for your loved one, come and have a look around - the Inverness garden is open 9am - 5pm Monday to Friday, and 9am - 12 noon on Saturday.

Did you know we have a state-of-the-art multi-media service room at our funeral home in Chapel Street, Inverness? Not only is it perfect for any kind of service - large or intimate, religious or secular - but we have a skype facility to broadcast the service directly to those who can't attend the funeral in person. It also allows those at a distance to contribute to the service. Technology can bring us closer together and we are proud and privileged to be able to offer this. Call us or pop in for a chat any time if you'd like to know more.

Good to know - looking at some of the questions we’re most commonly asked. This month we’re looking at what you should do if a loved one dies at home without a doctor present. If the death is expected, the first step would be to call your family GP or, if the death is out with surgery hours, NHS 24. A doctor will arrive to certify the death, and then you can contact us; we are available 24 hours a day. We can arrange to take your loved one into our care straight away or leave... you together until you feel ready. If the death was violent or arose from unexplained circumstances the police should also be called – it may be that your loved one will need to be taken initially into the care of the police, while the Procurator Fiscal looks into the circumstances of the death. If the police believe the death is of medical causes, there won’t be an investigation and they will allow you to contact us for our help. We are always available to offer advice in these circumstances, day or night.
