About Julie Read

‘World Class’ Mentor - unlocking your creative genius and getting you into art college.

Julie Read Description

I am a leading educator in the Creative Industries, as featured in The Guardian newspaper, on a mission to create a legacy to ‘unlock your creative genius’.

My passion and mission is assisting YOU in creating an art portfolio to get you that place at college or university. CLARITY, in particular around the creative process, sketchbooks and what the Colleges actually want to see are the founding principles.

Over the last 6 years I have become known as the “go-to” when it comes to bespoke 1: 2: 1 support for art applicants (and artists) to start exploring your creativity in a different way for success at art school or personal fulfilment.

I work with creative people worldwide, who want to prepare their art school portfolio in the best way possible so that they don’t miss out on their first choice UK college.

If this is you we’ll work closely to grow your confidence, explore your creativity and gain great clarity to produce that killer portfolio for success at art school.

A successful portfolio is not about how well you can draw or how high your grades at school are. It’s about ideas, the way you think and create.

Competition is fierce, for example at Edinburgh College of Art there are in the region of 6000 applicants for approximately 280 places (1: 22).

Therefore being successful with your portfolio is about speed of implementation and the sooner you start, the more advanced your portfolio is likely to be.

Portfolio Oomph will put an end to the confusion you will be feeling. This will buy you the competitive edge that is essential for success. And some previous students have received 5 unconditional offers for their dream courses.

…………starting right now!

If I could wave a magic wand and get the Colleges/Unis to make one thing easier or clearer for you, what would you ask for?

A fabulous entry here for The John Byrne Awards - are you aged 16-30, living in Scotland? Could you enter your artwork?

You can join film director Danny Boyle on Folkstone beach tomorrow to take part in creating a fabulous sand 'etching' installation to remember, say thank you and goodbye to the soldiers of the First World War.
A beautiful, simple project, very powerful idea, (see the video). Sometimes the simplest ideas are the best.
If you're not near Folkstone you can take a look at a map that shows beaches nationwide where you can get involved. A fabulous community project. #worldwarone #commemorate #remember #armistice #rememberancesunday #dannyboyle https://www.pagesofthesea.org.uk

Portraiture still has it's place in art portfolios. But you need to think about why and who are you portraying.
Like anything that you are drawing, painting and creating - there needs to be a reason for it, some interest and some passion to be honest.
There is no point just going through the motions to demonstrate your technical ability - you need to have a context and reason.
... Take a look at these portaits...........very inspiring.

If you're taking part in our Creativity Challenge starting next week or not, this would be really useful to read, to really get you focused.
I've written this FREE PDF guide that details the 7 most important aspects of a successful art college portfolio and how you can implement these in YOUR portfolio today.
Unless you know about these 7 important ways to approach your portfolio, you'll find creating your successful portfolio a bit of a mystery.
... I've been implementing these plans whilst working with students over the past 8 years, with success after success.
You can get your hands on a FREE copy of the guide '7 Ways' for free, right now, by clicking https://www.portfolio-oomph.com/go/7-ways -guide/

Read here about how important your UCAS statement can be, please don't rush it or overlook it. Yes, it's a post about Costume Design but its information is generic......
