It's #NationalNestBoxWeek so I have been cleaning out and boxes used last year and putting up some new ones.
Last year's boxes had any nest material removed and were then disinfected with boiling water and left to dry before being re-hung.
Let's hope that we get some happy residents this year.

I can see I have a lot to learn about lichens - this fascinating post from RSPB Love Nature seems like a good place to start.
We do have various lichen around Kirkennan but I couldn't claim to (yet) know what they are.

I was very excited to get our first set of solar panels installed on the roof of Woodsedge on Friday. These will be connected to the electricity supply for the biomass boiler to help reduce our carbon footprint.

This is an interesting place to visit. It is about an hour drive from Kirkennan Estate Holiday Cottages and can be combined with a visit to Galloway Forest Park.

Do you know a bird by it's song?
I have been trying to learn to identify birdsong and love it when a bird sits in clear view and sings it's heart out thus giving me time to check if I am right.
Can you tell what this is from the song alone? [I don't think the pictures will help!]

The snowdrops at Kirkennan Estate Holiday Cottages are now in full bloom which is a beautiful sight. I hadn't realised that they are alsoan important source of nectar for butterflies such as the Red Admiral, Small Tortoiseshell and Brimstone. I have yet to see any butterflies on the snowdrops - but from now on shall keep a look out.

stayed at Kirkennan in January 2017 with our three dogs and children. It was a wonderful stay. The Mews were kept in wonderful condition, plenty of space, everything we needed. great local areas for walking and exploring and the owners were very helpful if there were any problems. We hope to visit again in the future at a different time of year as in the winter was beautiful with the snow, but we are sure its just as amazing at other times of the year :)

User

We've just returned home from a week at Kirkennan Lodge.

The lodge was beautifull (exceptionally well equipped) and the estate was amazing. We had a lovely welcome from Jenny and really appreciated the fresh flowers and eggs that we found on our arrival.

Megan (12) absolutely adored the chickens and espcially seeing the baby chicks :-)

The 3 dogs were literally in heaven with the huge enclosed garden and amazing walks round, and we all loved the lovely scenery and peaceful estate.

Can't wait for a return visit.

Thankyou for an amazing week.

This is the second time we have stayed at Jennifer and Michaels cottage, we came back this year to celebrate our anniversary. We couldn't think of anywere better that we wanted to be, we were greeted by them again and presented with produce and eggs that we enjoyed. Woodsedge is just as lovely, comfortable ans warm as The Mews. The heating system is so efficient we have never had to use the fires and the cottages have all the electric appliances we have at home. Plus the dogs love Jocks wood, so great to have somewere they can run around off lead without worrying they might stray. There is no doubt we will be back again, we could try the Lodge next time, then we could pick a favourite, although that might be a hard decision to make.

This is everything you need and more for the perfect relaxation and little bit of heaven. We’ve visited 4/5 times and always feel perfectly at home... Jenny and Michael often bring home made honey, fresh wild flowers amongst vegetable treats from their allotment. They always stop to chat and fill us in on the wildlife on and around at the time. We’ve three dogs we take with us who although they’re lively, Jenny and Michael always welcome them. It’s our little bit of sanctuary and we’d welcome it to anyone who lives the countryside and a few days away from social media an reality.

Stayed for one week in the lodge early September, absolutely fell in love with the place! Gorgeously spacious lodge and garden located within fabulous grounds. First time visiting Scotland so tried to see as much as possible but really no need to venture too far as everything we needed was on our doorstep. Plenty of room for the two of us and very large dog, with so many local woodlands to explore we ran out of time to visit them all, really should have stayed longer On arrival we were greeted by owners mowing our lawn and offering us a tray full of home grown goodies (apples made for a yummy crumble!) Was saddened to wake on our last day and realise we would have to leave, 100% the loveliest holiday we've had and will certainly be looking to visit again! Thankyou very much for welcoming us xx

My friend Ann and I have had 2 fantastic holidays at the Lodge with our 2 dogs and are hoping to go back there again in the future

Last night of our third visit to Kirkennan and we've had a great week again. The cottage (Woodsedge) has been wonderful for mum in law who has limited mobility and the addition of an electric recliner chair has made her even more comfortable. The area is lovely, the people are really delightful and there are more great places to eat than can be counted. Red kite feeding at Bellymack farm was a highlight and daughter Neve is looking forward to a bit if pony trekking before we head home tomorrow. We'll be back.

User

Kirkennan is an amazing place to visit! Not only the countryside is breathtaking but the estate itself is run by amazing projects and people! I will always remember it and definitely recommend it.

User

Had a brilliant stay here this weekend. Stayed in the Lodge, which is great, amazing views. Jenny couldn't have been more helpful while we were booking our stay and answered all our questions. Looking forward to coming back for another visit sometime.

Fantastic place. We've stayed at numerous dog friendly holiday cottages in Scotland and Kirkennan rates as one of the best. Lovely break for us and our 4 dogs staying in Woodsedge. Plenty of good walks and beaches in the area to exercise the hounds. Plenty of things to do and see in the surrounding area. Especially the Red Kite feeding station in Laurieston. And all with the added bonus of knowing your going back to a nice warm cozy cottage at the end of the day. This will not be the only time we stay at Kirkennan.
