About Kirkness & Gorie

"Small but perfectly formed" - Decanter magazine ('Worth a Detour' feature).

Kirkness & Gorie Description

When James Kirkness opened his shop opposite St Magnus Cathedral in 1859, it was as a wine merchant and licensed grocer. Still owned and run by his descendants, and still in the original premises, we may well be Scotland’s oldest-established wine dealer still in family ownership.

KIRKWALL CASTLE! Fascinating to see what appears to be walls and cobbled paths associated with the old castle revealed by excavations at the head of Castle Street. A rare opportunity to see one of the town's historic landmarks, or the remains of it anyway. Although the castle was largely demolished in 1615, significant ruins remained much later than that. In fact, when James Kirkness opened his wine merchants on Broad Street in 1859, they still loomed large, as can be seen in this drawing portraying the street in the mid 1860s (James Kirkness's shop is on the far left.) The ruins were finally cleared away in 1865, as part of the great mid-century improvements to the town centre.

VIVA ESPANA! March is Spanish month in K&G, and we have just received a fantastic range of Spanish food.
We have the best cooking chorizo I've ever tasted, as well as ready to eat ready-sliced chorizo. Also in the fridge are giant anchovies, marinated olives and a special selection of cheeses including a lovely strong blue called La Peral, a Manchego-style sheeps cheese covered fragrant from its rosemary coating, and two fantastic goats cheeses.
Out of the fridge there ar...e too many Spanish goodies to list here, but including Ortiz tuna, smoked paprika flakes and powder, olive oil biscuits sweet and savoury, chocolate leaves with sea salt, fantastic paella rice, saffron to put in the rice, and more more more...
We're also offering 10% off ALL SPANISH WINE for the month of March!
