Yesterday afternoon one of our crew, Emma, sat and passed the assessments required to become one of the newest helms of the Kyle lifeboat "Spirit of Fred. Olsen", making her the first woman to have this role in the Station's history!
Although there have been a number of female crew members in the past, Emma has become the first to sit and pass her helm assessments, which now enables her to command the lifeboat. Emma, 31, a graphic designer and picture framer, has been a part... of the Kyle lifeboat crew for the past 5 years, and has been working towards qualifying to become a helm for the past year.
Speaking of the achievement, Lifeboat Operations Manager Sandy Murray said “It is an historic day for our lifeboat station, as Emma has become the first woman to hold the position of helm since the station was started almost 30 years ago. Emma has been a dedicated volunteer with us for a number of years, and this was the natural evolution for her. Everyone at the station would like to congratulate both Emma, and fellow crew member Andrew MacDonald, who also qualified yesterday.”

Update on yesterdays shout:
Kyle lifeboat launched at 4.30pm and made best speed towards the Kylerhea narrows, where the ‘Glenachulish’ had ran aground on the pier at Kylerhea. Kyle lifeboat arrived on scene at 4:40pm, and found the ferry had ran aground as the vehicles were being offloaded, leaving 1 vehicle stranded on the deck.
The lifeboat and 2 passing working vessels, the ‘Beinn Fhada’ and ‘Annie E’ attached a tow to the ferry and tried to free her before the tide drop...ped too far, however the attempt was unsuccessful. Mallaig lifeboat then arrived on scene at 5:15pm, but as the tide had dropped substantially, it was decided it was safer to leave the ferry aground on the pier until the tide began to flood again in a few hours.
Both lifeboats stayed on scene to oversee and monitor the situation until the tide was high enough to attempt to float the ferry free approximately 5 hours later. At 9.20pm, the tide had risen enough, and the lifeboats managed to get the ferry free of the pier.
Kyle lifeboat departed the scene at 9:45pm, and was refuelled and made ready for service by 10:10pm.

At 9:57am today, our crew were paged by the UK Coastguard, after members of the public raised concerns for a persons welfare. The lifeboat launched and, along with other search and rescue units & nearby vessels, began a systematic search of the area around the Skye Bridge. After a thorough search of the area, a body was recovered. Our thoughts are with the family at this time.
