I have children & a mortgage should I have any protection insurance in place?
Absolutely! In the event you were no longer here or alternatively you were suffering a critical illness or long term illness and no longer able to financially provide, how would the mortgage be paid? What impact would this have on your family’s quality of life? Certain protection policies can be arranged which could financially protect your family home and family’s lifestyle.

How much does your insurance cost? & when did you last review it?
Reviewing your cover on a regular basis is essential for many reasons. One of the most important reasons is to make sure that the cover suits your needs and is still relevant to your circumstances. Below I will list some examples of changes in circumstances where a review may be beneficial.
• The arrival of a child... • The purchase of a new home where the mortgage term and the mortgage amount has increased • You have re mortgaged your home increasing the debt • If you have critical illness insurance and don’t have an up to date contract it may not pay out as quick as more recent contracts • You have recently retired and previously enjoyed work benefits including company life insurance • A change in employer where the new employer has little employee benefits including no sick pay • Recently became self employed leaving a job where you had company life cover and company sick pay
Making sure your cover is suitable is extremely important , especially when it involves critical illness, did you know that recent enhancements in some critical illness policies have made it easier to claim on and would pay out quicker than some older styled contracts also many critical illness policies now include additional payments for certain less advanced illness including cancers which most older policies do not include.
If you have an insurance policy I recommend speaking to your adviser and arranging a review as it could be the difference from your policy paying or not , in the event you don’t have an adviser or are looking for a new one please get in touch and with Lanarkshire Life to take advantage of a free review on your policy.

What is Life or earlier critical illness insurance
Life or earlier critical illness insurance pays a cash lump sum in the event death or in the event of a specified critical illness like Cancer, Heart Attack , Stroke & MS to name some which ever was to happen first. Unlike life only insurance you do not need to die or be told you have 12 months or less to live to receive the financial benefit but you do need to meet the medical definition of how advanced your illness is. Man...y people think the insurer makes the rules on how advanced the illness has to be however this is not true, The association of British insurers (ABI) set how advanced your illness has to be to make a valid claim. What may come as a surprise is many insurers now have went over and above the ABI definition of illness and will pay out sooner than the standard set by the ABI and also offer additional payments for illnesses which are less advanced for example a specified less advanced cancer which has not spread. Life or critical illness would be set up for similar reasons to setting up a life only insurance to cover like paying a mortgage off or having a lump sum of cash in the bank to cover a period where you could not work although an income protection policy would be best suited to cover loss of earnings. Many people recover from a critical illness and lead a normal life however sometimes unfortunate effects of an illness could leave you not as capable as you were before resulting in making amendments to the lay out of a property of having to add an extension or downstairs bedroom and bathroom which would be another reason to arrange critical illness cover Due to the complexity of what is offered from one insurer to the next and the changes which often occur from time to time I would always recommend speaking to an adviser regarding cover when critical illness is included and to have regular reviews to make sure the policy is still suitable and relevant. If you have a policy and need it explained I recommend speaking to your adviser or contacting Lanarkshire Life as we will offer a free review of your current policy. Lanarkshire Life also do not charge a fee for any insurance work carried out as the insurer pays us a commission.
