About Lawfield Trout Fishery

Lawfield Trout Fishery consists of a beautiful and natural 6 acre fly only loch and a smaller 1 acre bait pond located above Kilmacolm, Renfrewshire. It is the brainchild of Billy McFerrin who has ran and maintained it for 29 years. Lawfield is renowned in Scotland as being a premier trout water stocked with prime hard fighting and fully finned rainbow, blue, brown and tiger trout and has an average depth of around 6ft - 8ft going down to 12ft around the island.
Due to the popularity of catch and release over the last decade, there is an excellent residential head of fish but also a regular stocking policy is employed to freshen the residents up. There are rainbows to 15lb, blues to 7lb and browns and tigers to 5lb.
The varied insect life is paramount to Lawfield's reputation and some stunning individual catches have come when the hatch is matched. There are excellent and extremely abundant hatches of buzzers during March, April and May, with olive and black being the most popular and we often see between 300 - 400 fish being recorded in a week! Olives, sedges, caenis, daddy long legs, black and brown beetles, corixa and damsels all make an appearance throughout the season.
The best flies for fishing Lawfield do vary but are generally smaller in size. CDC's are very popular all season in sizes from 12's to 20's as the season progresses in colours like olive, black, hare's ear and Yellow Owl. Thin epoxy style buzzers and sussy buzzers do well as does the Diawl Bach. foam beetles, small damsels, and traditional wets and dries. Fishing under the bung does well on its day with a variety of flies such as the millennium bug, blob or bloodworm. Lures also work too but more so early and late season with black rabbits, minkies, yellow dancers and fluffcats all doing well and blobs and FAB's take their fair share too.
