About Leakey'S Bookshop

Scotland's largest secondhand bookshop. Complete with open log fire and just about any book you could think of.

Leakey'S Bookshop Description

Leakey’s Bookshop was established in 1979 and has been housed for the last 19 years in the old Gaelic Church (1793). It is Scotland’s largest secondhand bookshop with 100, 000 selected volumes. We have been actively buying books throughout the Highlands for well over 30 years – buying that has been immensely exciting and fruitful.

The wood burning fire that heats the shop has filled many customers with amazement and some with dread. If you come to Inverness, Leakey’s will be one of the highlights of your visit.

We are currently trading online through AbeBooks. The online listings consist exclusively of interesting and unusual books, many of which are seldom seen. Browse our online catalogues at: http://www. abebooks.com/servlet /StoreFrontDisplay?cid=4602580

If you're in Inverness in December, don't miss these concerts!

With four walls of poetry and plays this is definitely one of the cosiest sections to browse in the bookshop.
Recent additions to the shelves include collected works by Seamus Heaney, Edith Sitwell, and a Gustave Doré illustrated edition of Samuel Coleridge's The Rime of the Ancient Mariner.

Looking rather good before opening up this morning, even if we say so ourselves.

If you are interested in classical music, why not support the Mahler Players - a fantastic chamber orchestra based here in the Highlands - in their fundraising campaign? In September 2016 and April 2017 they plan to put on multiple performances of Mahler's 9th and 10th Symphonies. Read more below!

We will be closed on Friday 1st and Saturday 2nd January and open again on Monday 4th January at 10am. Happy New year when it comes to all our readers.

Wishing all our readers a Merry Christmas.

Good morning folks. It's a very cold day here in Inverness but the sun is shining in places! Christmas is approaching fast it seems and we would just like to make you aware that we do provide gift vouchers for use in Leakey's. They are handwritten and have no time limit. Also easy to post!!!

User

Good morning folks. Yes, it's quite a while since we posted anything here! In answer to various inquiries - we are still open for book lovers to come and browse, we still buy books and we are happy to accept requests for books folk are looking for - just either phone the shop or message your request and we will try and help you.

The Mahler Players return for three concerts in the Highlands on the 24th, 25th and 26th June. Tickets (for the Dornoch and Nairn performances only) are available to buy here in Leakey's.

Just a wee snapshot of the revamped area upstairs in the bookshop. We have moved our fiction hardback section up here. We have also provided some comfy seats for our customers to relax in and browse through their potential book choices before purchasing.

Nearly the end of February and we have had snow and frost again!! Seasonal though it is, we had a glimpse of spring weather last week and it certainly gave us a lift to think of spring just around the corner! Work on revamping the old cafe area continues and even more shelves for books are being manufactured today! Our aim is to provide an area for our customers who want a wee comfy seat whilst browsing the books they may want to purchase. There will also be so much more space to display all the stock that is coming into the shop almost daily at the moment! We now have a large selection of graphic novels, lots of angling books to browse and many more choices added to the Scottish and Natural History sections. We are looking forward to meeting any of you who are coming to City of Inverness, Highlands of Scotland on holiday this year.

User

Hello everyone. It is still quite chilly here in the City of Inverness, Highlands of Scotland, however at the moment we are grateful for a dry crisp day rather than rain! Work is continuing in the old cafe area to make it into a comfortable browsing and seating area and hopefully will be completed in the next month or so. We have had quite a few fishing books in recently and shelf space in that area is now full to overflowing! Additions to the stock in general have been good so there's lots to browse next time you are in Inverness - The City in the Highlands

User

Hello all. We have had various requests recently for our website address and our price range. In answer to these questions, we do not at present have a website (though in time we may!) and our price range is from £2.50 upwards depending on the book!

User

Good morning all. Here in City of Inverness, Highlands of Scotland we have had a bit of snow in the last couple of days and the Highlands are looking fantastic, if a trifle challenging to get around in!!! We have had quite a bit of new stock in for you to browse in you are in town, including a quantity of graphic novels just waiting to be priced.

User

Apologies to anyone who tried to make it to the bookshop today and found we were closed. The results of the storm made it difficult for anyone to make it in to town this morning and open up - hopefully we will be open for business as usual tomorrow!

User

You may notice that we have removed the 'Cafe' from our page name. A new year and a new era for the bookshop. We have just as many books to choose from - in fact the choices grow by the day!!!

User

Nice place to be! Not far from Ironworks a must have see in Inverness. A house full of good old paper stuff!

I’m not sure why it’s taken me so long to come into the shop; I’ve always just assumed it was ‘another’ bookshop. But it isn’t, it’s amazing. From the second I shut the door behind me I knew I didn’t have enough time - only had 30 minutes to spare today - but I soon found the section on animals and picked up three new to me books on beekeeping, goats and poultry. I will definitely be back to browse through more shelves.

User

I love this place and I'm looking forward to seeing it again... Pleasant atmosphere, a lot of book treasures... When next visit Inverness my first trip will be to this place.

Books. Books and books and books and a log fire. The right book smell. Delightful and idiosyncratic collections of books. Far too tempting to spend too much money. But it’s all on books, so that’s fine.
