Leighton Library Description

The library is open to the general public from the beginning of May until the end of September as follows:
Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday 11am - 1pm and other times by arrangement with Tho. & J W Barty tel: 01786 822296. In addition the library is regularly included in Stirling Council Doors Open Weekends in September each year.

#OnThisDay 1759 Robert Burns, widely regarded as the national poet of Scotland and celebrated worldwide, was born. Dunblane's historic Leighton Library has a 1787 edition of his "Poems, chiefly in the Scottish dialect." Robert Burns visited Dunblane that year 1787.

For Doors Open Day, Sunday 16 September, visit Dunblane's historic 17th century Leighton Library, the oldest purpose-built library in Scotland, the gift of just one man, academic and churchman Robert Leighton. It's free and normally open Monday-Saturday 11am-1pm in the summer months only. Ask to see one of our 4,500 books from 16th-19th century, 89 languages, twelve 17th century red leather chairs - our volunteer guides live to try to find a book to suit your interest and let you handle the history of a hundreds of years old book. The Leighton Library overlooks Andy Murray's golden postbox, and is just yards from Dunblane Museum and Dunblane Cathedral so we are easy to find and there's always lots to see nearby.

#OnThisDay 1776 David Hume, one of the most important figures in the history of western philosophy and the Scottish Enlightenment, died. He was a philosopher, historian, economist, and essayist. Dunblane's historic Leighton Library has the 8-volume 1763 edition of his "The history of England, from the invasion of Julius Caesar to the revolution in 1688" - visit for free Monday to Friday 11am-1pm, Saturday 11am-3pm and Sunday 2pm-4pm - the Leighton Library is between Dunblane Cathedral, Dunblane Museum and Andy Murray's golden postbox.

#OnThisDay 1662 French mathematician, physicist, inventor, writer and philosopher Blaise Pascal died. He had been a child prodigy and made important contributions to the study of fluids, probability theory and did pioneering work on mechanical calculators. Dunblane's historic Leighton Library has a 1675 edition of his "Pensées de M. Pascal sur la religion, et sur quelques autres sujets, qui ont esté trouvées après sa mort parmy ses papiers." The Leighton Library is open Monday to Friday 11am-1pm, Saturday 11am-3pm and Sunday 2pm-4pm - free admission.

#OnThisDay 1771 Scottish historical novelist, playwright, and poet Sir Walter Scott was born. Dunblane's Historic Leighton Library has an 1810 first edition of his epic poem "The Lady of the Lake" (which helped make The Trossachs a top tourist destination) as well as an 1830 edition of his "A description of the regalia of Scotland" about the Honours of Scotland, including crown, sword of state and sceptre (the earliest surviving Crown Jewels in Europe) which he had been instrumental in bringing back to public gaze in 1818 after being hidden a century before following union of parliaments.
