Celebration of the Partnership Agreement between Mersey Maritime and Liverpool John Moores University
Last month, Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU) and Mersey Maritime signed a ground-breaking agreement to work in partnership on skills and innovation. This Agreement, and the exciting possibilities it paves the way for, are the reason we are celebrating with a dinner, in the company of LJMU Vice Chancellor Prof Nigel Weatherill.
The 3 year agreement to collaborate on sk...ills and innovation has formalised a strategic partnership with the aim of sharing the knowledge, experience and expertise of both organisations to aid growth in the sector. By harnessing the considerable strength of both brands the partnership will seek to drive innovation, research and development, and increase industry engagement and support for the entire maritime sector of the region.
It is also clear that partnerships between universities and the private sector (industry representational bodies) are viewed positively by Government and funding agencies. Mersey Maritime and LJMU will therefore also cooperate on joint funding applications across a wide variety of investment streams including UK and EU in order to maximise their chances of success. The partnership cements LJMU’s heritage as one of the oldest nautical institutions in the UK, having served the sector with innovative technology since 1892.
For Mersey Maritime’s part, the relationship will provide opportunities to create stronger alliances with maritime businesses, training centres and universities across the UK and the EU. This includes working with LJMU as a founding partner in the creation and roll-out of a Mersey Maritime Skills Federation (due to launch in Autumn 2015).
Further opportunities – A Maritime Knowledge Hub The partnership also provides a firm basis from which to consider a proposed co-location of Mersey Maritime with LJMU and the creation of a Maritime Knowledge Hub in Wirral. The aim of such a hub would be to bring together some of the City Region’s key maritime assets, including LJMUs simulators which are in disparate locations across Merseyside, and to create new incubator / business space and teaching facilities which would support business growth, maritime skills development, knowledge transfer and innovation.
The Hub could also be further strengthened by the collaboration that is currently taking place between LJMU and the Coventry Manufacturing Technology Centre – a Government sponsored Catapult Centre, to run a Business Launch Centre MTC@LJMU (See supporting information below). Some 12 MTC employees will be based at LJMU’s Faculty of Engineering and Technology and will work alongside LJMU Business Development staff to provide expertise and support to SME businesses within different areas of Engineering Simulation across the city region.

Maritime Clusters meet in Liverpool Representatives of eight maritime cluster organisations from the UK, Portugal, Spain, France, Ireland and Norway met at Liverpool John Moores University’s Open Labs to begin work on a new project designed to deliver the EU Atlantic Strategy. The meeting was attended by the representative of the Directorate-General for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, Mr Ramon Van-Barneveld who is responsible for coordinating the strategy. Led by Liverpool J...ohn Moores University and Mersey Maritime the aim is to bring together clusters maritime of businesses and universities from the EU regions to address the key objective of the strategy to drive innovation, jobs and growth in the SME sector. Ian Jenkinson commented that ‘each of our regions has strengths in its industries and specialist expertise. By collaborating help each other develop areas where we lack the critical mass and knowledge to support growth.’ The delegates later joined Mersey Maritime and Liverpool John Moores University at the Mersey Maritime Industry Awards dinner which brought together the business leaders to celebrate the achievements of the regions maritime and engineering businesses.

Supporting Maritime and Engineering Innovation
LJMU has received a £5 million share of HEFCE’s £200 million funding scheme to support an increase in high-quality science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) students.
This was the highest amount, awarded to 27 of the 73 universities and colleges, who will receive the teaching capital project funding starting 2015-16. The Government confirmed the results in their latest Science and Innovation Strategy and LJMU was t...he only Merseyside university to be funded under this scheme.
At LJMU, STEM teaching accommodation will be upgraded and will include a new maritime teaching facility, comprising a 360° full-mission bridge simulator and five 270° bridges; an engine room simulator; and a PC-based simulation laboratory for maritime programmes. As one of only six UK universities with a dedicated maritime focus, this investment will create a world-class platform for maritime education, knowledge transfer and industry engagement to support regional strategic initiatives around the Port of Liverpool expansion and the Atlantic Gateway developments and the national Industrial Strategy focus on the offshore wind, oil and gas, and nuclear sectors. In response to identified skills shortages associated with regional SuperPort-related projects, LJMU is working with the Mersey Maritime employer group and local FE colleges to develop a skills progression pipeline.
Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Education), Professor Peter Byers commented:
"This HEFCE funding will allow us to further continue the University’s investment into excellent and innovative teaching and learning environments. It will also provide the opportunity to fill current STEM skills gaps in the region, which is of particular importance for SuperPort-related projects, and will impact on job and wealth creation overall."
Madeleine Atkins, Chief Executive of HEFCE said:
"This funding is badly needed by universities and colleges to meet the increased interest in science and engineering. It will also ensure that students benefit from state-of-the-art equipment and laboratories, and are thereby equipped for the workplace of the 21st century.
"I am particularly pleased to see successful projects across all parts of the country, and the degree to which institutions are focusing their investment to support their local economies and key industry partners."
