A83 REST AND BE THANKFUL REOPENS FOLLOWING MULTIPLE LANDSLIDES LAST WEEK
... Teams have completed recovery works after 3,000 tonnes of material reached the landslip mitigation measures following landslides last week Temporary traffic lights remain in place for safety while teams work to continue with mitigation measures
The A83 Rest and Be Thankful has reopened after multiple landslides meant the road was closed for safety last week.
Around 3,000 tonnes of debris reached the specially designed landslip mitigation measures above the A83, preventing most from reaching the roadside. Teams have worked continuously to carry out repairs to the debris fencing following the landslips, to clear material from the roadside and debris fences as well as installing additional drainage measures along the roadside to help improve resilience.
A full safety assessment along with a final check with Police Scotland has meant the road was safely reopened around 11.20am.
Temporary traffic lights will remain in place for safety on the A83 while teams work to continue with remaining landslip mitigation works at the Rest and Be Thankful. A 24-hour recovery vehicle and additional patrols will be on hand for the next few days to assist any road users as required and help keep traffic moving during the reopening of the A83.
Eddie Ross, BEAR Scotland’s North West Representative, said:
“Following a full safety assessment this morning along with representatives from Police Scotland, we were pleased to reopen the A83 at the Rest and Be Thankful following the multiple landslides last week.
“Teams from multiple organisations have worked tirelessly in what has been challenging conditions to do all they can to secure the slope above the road, repair the fences and keep the Old Military Road and other routes into Argyll open.
“Temporary traffic lights will remain in place on the A83 as teams continue work to carry out the remaining mitigation measures at the Rest and Be Thankful. We’ll also have a recovery vehicle and patrols in the area to help ensure the reopening of the road goes smoothly and keep traffic moving in Argyll.
“We thank the local community and road users for their patience while our teams worked to reopen the road and encourage them to drive safely through the Rest and Be Thankful while teams complete the remaining repairs at the site.”

Not Loch Goil unfortunately :(
This photo clearly shows the sharp powerful claws on a seal's front flippers and a little surprisingly, the webbed hind flippers have five claws too
A couple of cute, juvenile seals at Loch Goil
Orkney porpoises are certainly more interactive and less shy than ours here in Loch Goil

Bruce at his most intimidating - looking you straight in the eye and powering towards you.
This photo shows just how well camouflaged our seals are against the rocks.

brilliant friendly owners really nice and welcoming been twice this year with the kids hired fishing rods at a cheap rate go fishing caught lots of mackrel and cod highly recommended boats are very sturdy and easy to use will be back again thanks very good value for money been going to carrick castle for many years now a must be is to try the boat hire its well priced
What a wonderful experience! Being honest, I started off sceptical, but I soon came to realise I was wrong. We had a 4.15 start which was later than I had originally planned but it was a beautiful time of day! The loch was quiet, the weather was slightly cooler (we visited in July blistering sunshine). The owners were friendly and professional without being patronising. Our boat was comfortable and easy to use. The wildlife and scenery were stunning. Porpoises definitely being the star of the show! Excellent few hours worth every penny! Would recommend for old and young! :)
We had the most wonderful time today. Porpoise, seals and glorious weather. Great value for money, as a family we had a really fun day and dog friendly which is always a bonus. See you again soon
We had a fantastic trip out yesterday despite the weather took my 9 year old and 12 year old girls loved something different amazing views boat was spectacular and friendly service could not ask for more xx
We had a fantastic day! The owners were great and managed to fit us in at a days notice. Our 3 boys absolutely loved the trip out on the lochs and letting them have a little go was the highlight of their holiday! It was amazing seeing seals in their natural environment and watching the gannets swoop down to catch fish, we also saw jellyfish and starfish too! We nearly caught our tea, but it got away! Next time we will! We'll definitely be back and highly recommend your boats to others looking to explore the lochs! Thank you!
We had a fantastic day and even managed to catch our tea! Easy to book with the super friendly owners. The boats are ideal for complete beginners. Beautiful part of the world. Thanks for a fab afternoon.
We booked at the last minute and it was the highlight of our holiday. Friendly, helpful, informative people. Stunning views and fabulous animals. A must do!
Thoroughly enjoyed my adventure with Loch
Goil
Cruisers....fabulous experience on the water with views of many seals, porpoises, herons etc. and perfect customer service from the owners
This by far is a MUST do if you are visiting Scotland.
We had seen reviews before booking, and had to travel 2 hours from where we was staying in Scotland...
The 2 hour drive was so worth it!!! Michelle and her partner are so friendly. The boat was clean and even though it rained a little when we was on the boat we kept dry at the front! We were able to get up close to seals and spotted porpoises in the loch too. My daughter said it was the best day she has ever had, and if I’m honest it was one of the best family days we have had!
Thank you for providing us with such a fantastic opportunity to make great memories!
Thank you Michelle and Richard for the wonderful day you gave us and our kids, amazing memories to last a lifetime, you guys are truly fantastic
Had an amazing day today. The water was calm. The sun shone. The birds entertained. We saw star fish and jelly fish. The scenery is absolutely stunning. The seals played peek-a-boo and the little boat was perfect. Thank you soo much.
Had a great morning. Boat was easy to manage and had shelter in case it rained ... Not that we needed it as the sun came out. Saw loads of gannets diving up close and stunning scenery. Very friendly owners. Will come again.
Great boat trip on the loch today! Michelle and Richard are very friendly and welcoming, going out their way to fulfil our needs. On our trip we saw porpoises, seals, dive bombing gannets and starfish. It was raining on the day we visited, fortunately the boats provide a lot of cover so this was not an issue at all. I would definitely recommend Loch Goil Cruisers for all ages!
Fantastic experience. Very hospitable people. Thanks.
Fantastic day out..the wee boats are brilliant, glorious sunny day, we saw porpoises, seals and I'm sure I saw a puffin, the couple went beyond the call of duty helping my partner when the dog pulled him off his feet and he got a nasty scrapped knee...thank you for all your help..highly recommended 😊
Brilliant way to see the amazing wildlife in and around the loch! We brought a picnic hamper, turned the engine off and drifted through the stunning sights and sounds. I was even lucky enough to return to shore with a new diamond ring...thank you for your amazing service and ability to keep a secret!
Brilliant experience. Few delays on the roads so I would suggest checking Google so that your on time. They are running a business after all.
Booked 48 hours before and was really impressed/grateful with how they fitted us in: the time we selected was taken before we managed to get back to them, a suitable alternative was offered and they were more than accommodating when we added extra people to our booking. This is the second time we have booked through LGC and would definitely recommend
