For more than 25 years I've been working in the spa and wellness industry with a focus on the practice and teaching of yoga. Like so many teachers, my path to this profession hasn't been an easy one. . . I started going to yoga classes when I was a teenager. I showed up each week (if I could be bothered) focused only on the physical benefits and the nice sleep at the end. It's fair to say my path to enlightenment wasn't obvious at that time. Much of that early practice was spent in a permanent state of sweaty frustration. I'd try to convince my body, without success, that it possessed the abilities of an Olympic gymnast. It did not then, nor does it now! I never reached the state of Nirvana that those around me appeared to have. As we all sat crossed legged, with our palms together, my squirmy body and distracted mind would have me counting the seconds until I could get moving again. Convinced I was not cut out for the yoga life, I gave up. Despite my best efforts to stay away from this yoga malarky, it was always on my radar. Working in the spa industry exposed me to places where yoga and other wellness practices were an everyday occurrence. I continued to dabble and educate myself little by little. Then came the part of my life that changed everything. Illness, bankruptcy, loss of a 16-year relationship and some epic detachment from sanity put me firmly back on the path of yoga. Growth is painful and my challenges were and indeed still are, no different to anyone else's. I've battled self-doubt, self-loathing, blame, anger, guilt and loneliness along the way. The beauty of walking such a path is that amongst the jaggy thorns there's self- discovery and incredible ‘a-ha' moments. The moments where you know, deep in your core, that it's all going to be OK.
