The company name is derived from Latin ludo, 'I play' and from Old French metre, with specific sense of "metrical scheme in verse, " from Latin metrum. The double meaning of metrum to imply using statistical methods of analysing play did not go unnoticed, though. Coincidentally (or was it?), the company was founded on May 20th, which is World Metrology Day.
