Sometimes the staff are nice.
Today they were appalling and obviously getting paid for substandard services. I asked one of them whether they sold boxes of chocolates and she just pointed in a rude surely manner at the rack of chocolate bars. Then after repeating my question and ascertaining her appalling level of English comprehension . She just laughed foolishly , admitted her ignorance in relation to the enquiry and referred me to the miserable looking supervisor. Quit surprising for someone who has been employed to work in a customer facing role in a country where English is the national language. It raises questions about the recruitment process. The supervisor then pointed out where they were surprisingly it was near to where his unhelpful co-worker was working. When I worked in the retail industry part of the basic training involved getting to know the lay out of stock apparently standards appear to have changed in a regressive manner.
The supervisor had a similar surly manner and when I was about to pay told me there would be a 20p service charge (for an over £4.00 transaction ) which I thought was mean considering this is a chain store. On a relevant side note most of the items(perhaps not the same brands ) on sale could be picked up from competitors such as Scotmid , Marks and Spencer's , Tesco Waitrose etc. So I wonder what actually separates this store from the rest apart from the novelty of it being an Edinburgh franchise.
I actually wouldn't have been bothered about paying the 20p service charge if the service was more friendly and pleasant , but I decided to go with my principle and not do that. Even when I asked the supervisor if there was a cash point near by he could only grunt his ignorance with regards to my question.
It turned out there was actually an ATM outside of the shop that said out of order however he did not even say there was one.
In metropolitan Britain it's a depressing reality that you go into a lot of shop's (even more surprising when its a franchise ) and the staff don't even speak basic English and to add to it on this occasion had a really poor attitude(for a customer service role ) too.
I can only hypothesise in this instance and similar ones , that it means nothing to them how they chose to behave as their abroad for a bit and not really got a vested interest in the long term of where they are.
True the shop has a good posh selection but so does Waitrose to a better degree. Also the staff in comparison know how to handle simple customer enquiries.
