We arrived early so room wasn’t ready. We left luggage and went out for a great walk into the village centre about 15 mins away. When we left we were told we didn’t have a sea view room but by the time we got back they’d found us one. Hooray, it was fab with table and big comfy chairs to look at the wonderful view.

Lots of nice touches in the hotel a welcome glass of whiskey, water(fizzy & still) in the room, ice bucket in room filled, mince pies in the evening. The staff we encountered at reception, in the dining room /bar and in the spa all seemed to be trying their best to make our stay very enjoyable and they succeeded. We had a great time- thanks to everyone.

My husband and I are just back from a fantastically, relaxing, romantic night away at the MacDonald Marine Hotel on a dinner, bed, breakfast and cream tea basis. It was the anniversary of the day we met and the staff went out of their way to make our stay special. We were upgrade to a beautiful suite, with spectacular views - they helped my husband arrange flowers and prosecco as a surprise for me. We would definitely return!!

We had a very disappointing stay. The hotel was busy and there clearly were not enough staff in the dining room. We had to wait 45 mins for our order to be taken. Then the £25 allowance for the evening meal wasn't enough to have even one course for dinner. Once we added veg we were over budget. If you add another course it is extra again! The room was cold but staff just shrugged when told. Next morning we waited 50 mins for breakfast until we complained. To be fair they did agree to refund the cost of breakfast so we could leave immediately and go elsewhere for breakfast. We'll not be back.

Found it absolutely amazing all the staff so helpful and kind ,my 2 very large Bernese Mt Dogs where cherished ,my older dog had an injury and they bent over backs word to help .food was fab ,rooms amazing .tas we had the dogs we could only eat in the bar but it was reserved for breakfast and dinner .cant wait till we come back .husband said he has never known such a big friendly staff

User

Can’t fault this hotel at all, Stayed for 2 nights with our dog. The room was fine everything clean, tea and coffee facilities and hairdryer. We ate out each night for dinner but had breakfast. We were shown to our table and asked what drinks we wanted, then another waiter took order for food. The continental was fine, everything fresh and plenty to help yourself to. Cooked breakfast was excellent . The staff were all polite abd very attentive . Whenever we walked through hotel staff always acknowledged us and the dog. The spa facilities were excellent, we did not book any treatments, just used pool and sauna and steam rooms. The outside thermal is excellent . A lovely relaxing couple of days away at a lovely hotel in a beautiful position. We will certainly be back.

User

After our disaster the first time using this place for a friend's birthday, we put a complaint it as we had pre booked and paid for treatments in the spa, the general manager of the spa had called us at 18.40pm the night before telling us we couldn't get our treatments. To say we where not happy was an understatement. However, Grant the manager had offered us to come back all expenses paid to make up for it. I must say it was like a different place and we had an amazing time. It was a millions times better than our first experience and we would definitely recommend and I most definitely will be returning. Thanks to the manager Grant and all the other staff for making our time away a memorable one.

User

Absolutely fantastic experience at the Marine Hotel. Huge room with bay window overlooking golf links and Firth of Forth to Fife, islands of Fidra, Craigleith, the Bass Rock and Isle of May. Dinner a culinary delight and excellent breakfast. Staff helpful and friendly. Nothing not to like. Thank you The Marine Hotel.

User

Went for a spa break of one night and have to say the spa facilities are excellent. The pool, 2 saunas, 2 steam rooms an ice room and 2 sensation and massage showers. We didn't book any treatments so can't comment on those. Our room (225) was lovely and overlooked the golf course and sea. We ate out in North Berwick so can't comment on dinner. Breakfast was far from slick in that we had to wait in the bar for 20 mins whilst they cleared and set up tables. Too long!! When we were eventually seated silly little things like no teaspoons and having two pepper pots and no salt, no butter or ketchup available without asking, having to take your side plate to spoon jam out of a jar on to it were annoying. The food however was excellent and well cooked.

Would go back just for the spa facilities.

User

Took my mum here for a spa day for her birthday. We both really enjoyed our day. Spa staff were polite and helpful, the treatments were very nice. Facilities at the spa were clean and we especially enjoyed the outdoor Jacuzzi which was like a hot bubbly bath! Lunch upstairs in the beautifully decorated lounge area was tasty and the staff again were very efficient. Overall an enjoyable visit.

User

Stayed at hotel for 2 nights with my husband and my 2 dogs

Beautiful room and hotel We were made feel very welcome including our two dogs. This hotel is very dog friendly which I would highly recommend Great walks on beach. Sitting next to coal fire chilling reading the papers with dogs at our feet All made for a lovely break During our stay we had the fire alarm went off at night All guests were assembled outside hotel until firefighters attended fire The staff were excellent and kept us well informed All ended well

Breakfast was lovely but very slow A wee but more organisation needed

Will definitely return and recommend

Just back from a spa break with family & had a fantastic time! The ladies in the spa were great and the facilities were good! Looks like work is being done to upgrade areas. Was a bit disappointed with our room (needed updating) which was made worse by a bascially non functioning shower but we were very rarely in it and it was clean. Staff wete fantastic and breakfast was brilliant! Would go back but would check room type before going.

User

Went with a friend who is a member. The jacuzzi that goes outside had only half working...the same half as was working when I went about nine months ago. The steam room had little steam and was almost cold. The lock on my locker would not open and I had no way of contacting the desk to get a staff member. I had to wait till my friend dressed and she went through and got a member of staff. I would not hurry back can get same facilities with my East Lothian Leisure card that costs me £22 a month concession. Would have to say the gym equipment looked very good but did not use them. Xx

User

We arrived on Thursday - room was fine - bit of a draft from window - went to lounge to have drink and lunch - only 1 person serving - couldn’t serve us at bar told to wait in lounge - he never appeared so we walked into town. Back at night - tried for drink again - same waiter - heard him trying to explain to a manager that the bar had run out of many things - he was told to go to store to fill up but he couldn’t leave the bar - the other man didn’t offer to help - just opened a bottle drank it and left.

Breakfast next morning was a farce - went to restaurant - was told there was no tables available - I could see plenty empty tables but we went to lounge to wait - to be called “whose next” - eventually got table and place tea order which came - had to ask twice for cups then teaspoons then butter for the toast that was soggy untoasted bread. The staff that were there had not a clue what they were doing and no leadership. Staff were ignoring customers - was quite shocked by it all. While in lounge heard some people express their disappointment in the food and service so we decided to ear out of the hotel.

We enjoyed the spa facilities and can see where money has been spent but think spending money on the staff in the hotel would be more beneficial - more staff and training is needed - I understand the hotel will be going through refurbishment soon and that will be of great benefit as the hotel is needing it - it is tired and furnishings are in badly need to being renewed.

What really put the nail in the coffin to our break was when the waiter managed(accidentally) to pour a full pint over my husband - thought the waiter was going to have a breakdown when he did it - he did bring our drinks up to by now our freezing room and apologised again!! The room was so cold and we had so many clothes - we decided to go home after speaking to reception about our issues - the female receptionist just wasn’t interested - “I can’t do anything about you being cold” - then when she was being told about the spilling incident took a bit of paper and folded it up - customer service is a huge thing and this hotel lacks it big time.

My husband organised this for our Xmas and We feel bad that it didn’t live up to what we expected and that we had to leave early. We shouldn’t have to feel bad about a break away and have never done so anywhere we have stayed but this hotel did!! We won’t be back and We won’t be recommending this hotel!!

User

Stayed for one night , was put in a room with a view of a building site , not what i would call a 4 star hotel no one should be paying £149.00 for one night and put in a room as bad as that .Spa is good especially the outside bit , bit whole trip was spoilt by our room, shut curtains to block view out but room was freezing because curtains covered the radiator .wouldn't go back .

User

Just back from spa break at Marine hotel. Spa facilities very good and treatments ok. When we tried to book into spa there was no one at reception so had to wait 15mns. Disappointing that relaxation room was out of use due to ceiling repair and no advance notice of this. On leaving spa we were asked to pay for treatments but spa break had included these. Receptionist said it had been put through wrong and he would have to get a manager to correct it but didn't keep us back at least. Evening meal was lovely and service good. Lovely comfortable executive room with beautiful view of grounds, golf course and sea. Breakfast was not great as asked for tea and was given coffee. Toast was only toasted on one side and brought to table cold. Small portion of butter not sufficient for two people. Staff did resolve these things quickly on request however. On checking out we were asked to pay for wine already paid for albeit receptionist accepted very quickly that we had in fact paid-seemed as if this was a recurring error. These incidents did unfortunately detract from what could have been an idyllic stay in a lovely hotel in a perfect location but couldn't say we didn't enjoy it.

User

I went for a birthday weekend. Hotel lovely and staff very nice but restaurant service was awful. Waiting ages, brought wrong drinks, no salt and pepper in pots and when I asked for more the ones brought to me had nothing in either - that happened both days. On the second day the outside hot pool was cold.

User

Went here for 2nd time. The room and view was lovely. We chose it especially as enjoy outside hot tub. However we were very disappointed that this was not available and hadn’t been forewarned as it was out of order. We had called for room service put through to a number but no one answer. I had to get dressed as just back from spa to go to bar. Despite room service been part of hotel facilities. We had dinner in restaurant which was nice. Took 30 mins to get drinks order.

Breakfast was very disappointing, there was no uncut bread left. The cooked breakfast was cold and bacon was like rubber. My boiled eggs were so hard my soldiers were sadly redundant. We checked out and were asked to pay for the drinks we had already paid for!! So, all in all, it was very disappointing and would not feel I could recommend this hotel again to my friends and family.

User

I’m not a happy bunny, we’ve been to this hotel and spa several times, never had a problem, we’re sitting waiting in the spa for treatments, gets to 4:15pm ( our treatments we’re to start at 4pm) one of the girls comes saying oh your later treatments aren’t you? Nope we’re not we’re 4pm, turns out the therapists took 2 other people, I’m wondering how does that work? So there’s 2 ladies called Jacqui and ashleigh? Away she went to check, and came, it’s not on, should they check paperwork and computer? Apparently not, so my daughter went with her, and someone coming for me at 5pm, I’m like that’s fine but I better not be out that treatment room until 7pm it’s 2 hours of treatment booked, would you like some wine, water or cakes she asks? I’ll keep my reply to myself, I hope I can now relax enough to enjoy the treatments, and I’m in a stuffy room which is too hot and I’ve got a banging headache, this is a polite version of how I’m feeling

User

When you offer out a special deal you need to make sure you not only have the staff to fulfil this but also book what’s supposed to be booked! Missing booking, no robes available, when they did come they were in very poor condition, cancelled appointments, 1hr 30mins between courses and a whole heap of excuses. Never again which is a complete shame as the place is stunning

A lovely relaxing couple of days away at a lovely hotel in a beautiful position. We will certainly be back.

Xx

User

It is not possible to tick zero stars so please ignore the one star rating above!

User
