About Mccallum Bagpipes Ltd

McCallum Bagpipes is one of the best known and most advanced bagpipe manufacturers in the world today. We produce the highest quality bagpipes, smallpipes, chanters and piping products.

Mccallum Bagpipes Ltd Description

McCallum Bagpipes was formed in 1998 by existing partners, company directors Stuart McCallum and Kenny MacLeod. Stuart and Kenny had known each other for years through piping before starting the company, having both been members of the Glasgow Skye Association Pipe Band.

Kenny was already selling practice chanters made by Stuart when he was in California. They were an instant success so when Kenny came back in 1998 they decided to join forces and develop bagpipes and pipe chanters.

The company started out under the crammed conditions of a shed in the McCallum Timber Buildings yard in Kilmarnock’s Moorfield Industrial Estate, but quickly outgrew its surroundings and moved to a self contained unit nearby which enabled the company to increase its workforce and manufacturing capability. In the following years, the company has continued to outgrow itself and expand its output.

In a short period of time, McCallum Bagpipes has developed into the world’s leading bagpipe makers. Why?

We started in in 1998 with 3 people;
we now have 34,
We manufacture 40 sets of bagpipes every week, along with smallpipes, pipe chanters, practice chanters and reeds,
We make all these products in our factory, we don’t buy any component parts from anywhere else,
We control the quality of all of our products and don’t have to rely on any other makers for supplies,
Most of our team are pipers and take great pride in there work. They want to be associated with the finest bagpipes and will always give you their best advice and assistance.

McCallum Bagpipes now occupies 10, 000 square feet of unit space comprising our fantastic factory and beautifully appointed showroom dealing in bagpipes, smallpipes, percussion and highlandwear under one roof.

You can be sure when you buy a McCallum Bagpipes instrument that you are making a sound investment.

Looking to try reed options for your Ceòl pipe chanter? We got this e mail from top solo piper and reed-maker Allan Russell. Check out his video clip below ,no tape on the chanter and the pipes are booming.
The Ceòl chanter works well with a very wide range of reeds.
So Cool….So Ceòl
... "Hello! I am pleased to announce the launch of our new website and online shop http://www.russellbagpipes.net/ We offer a 10% introductory discount on all orders of the first month of trading. (Use Promotion code QCG8GD) 2018 has brought the development of our new pipe chanter reed. Click on the following link to play a video of our new reed being played in the new McCallum plastic pipe chanter. https://youtu.be/NMr_pJDhM2k
The introduction of our cane drone reeds available with an inverted bass and plastic practice chanter reeds may also be of interest. We were especially happy with Dr. Peter McCalister Success in winning the 2018 Northern Meeting Gold Medal playing our pipe chanter reed. I myself had good success at various competitions and Highland Games during 2018 using the reed. Feel free to contact me for any requirements you may have or order direct from the web site. We can offer 30 day accounts for pipe bands and discounts for regular customers. Trade enquiries are welcome. Regards Allan Russell Partner”

“The annual Royal New Zealand Pipe Band Annual Summer School was another big success. Held each January in Christchurch, the school had a very impressive 116 students. It is always great to have the support of McCallum Bagpipes for the past 12 years. Each year we hold a tune-writing contest for the piping students. They must write the piece themselves during the school and there are no restrictions on which type of tune they write. The winners can select their prize from... a very impressive variety of McCallum Chanters.
I have attached the winning tunes here:
1st - Roptopateke - a slow air written by Dan O'Brien 2nd - Lickin’ the Reed - a jig written by Scott Orange 3rd - Naughty Kitten - a jig written by Maneo Armstrong 4th - Friday Arvo - a jig written by Declan Cruickshank
We also gave out McCallum baseball caps to the honourable mentions.
Many thanks to McCallum Bagpipes for their support of the NZ summer school for many years.
Regards Jack Lee”

Some great music from Breton group Noon.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8A-jP4nCq 08
They play McCallum Bagad chanters in the key of B, along with some electronic backing, here’s what their web site says.
... "A unique formation in the current musical landscape, NOON is betting on breaking codes by combining electronic music and the sound power of four bagpipes.
On tour throughout France since January 2018, the quintet shakes the crowds and grabs its audience. Well influenced by the electro, the trap or the traditional music of Brittany, the five members of NOON have not finished surprising.
In 2019, the band will be back on stage with their first EP scheduled for spring."
