Play golf? Please read this article and be aware that with high levels of exposure to the sun your risks of melanoma are increased.
86% of melanoma cases are preventable. That means consistently using a high factor UVA and UVB sunscreen of SPF 30+ and applying it 30 minutes before you hit the course and again regularly throughout the day according to instructions. Pay particular attention to areas that are continuously exposed such as the face, hands, arms, legs, ears or bald... head.
AVOID sunburn Cover up to avoid ‘reddening of the skin’ Wear UV protective clothing with long sleeves Wear wrap round sunglasses to protect the eyes Wear a wide-brimmed hat or one that has a peak and protects your neck Stay in the shade (especially from 1100 to 1500) if you ca
If you do see a spot, mole or lesion that is unusual, changing or you have any concerns about at all, get it checked. Don't delay. Early diagnosis is key. Go to the doctor and be sure you understand the assessment given. If you aren’t happy about it, ask for a second opinion, preferably with a dermatologist. ‘Looks OK’ is not a diagnosis.

Congratulations and thank you to all our 100 Miles in May challenge participants. You helped raise #melanomawareness amongst family, friends, colleagues and more. You shone when out racing and pacing the miles (those bright yellow shirts!) and you've helped raise funds for much needed new research into the treatment and causes of #melanoma. We can't thank you enough. #melanomachampions

To mark the publication of both the Melanoma Patients Matter report and the Talking About Melanoma Matters discussion guide, an interview with Delia Sworm, Vice Chair of BASCSN, has been published today in the Nursing Times online.
"Through our regular interactions with people with melanoma and their carers, clinical nurse specialists (CNSs) are in a unique position to hear their concerns, answer their questions and personalise their care. We work with the multidisciplinary clinical team (MDT) to ensure they receive the treatment options best suited to their needs."

As treatment options for melanoma have changed in recent years, patients now have more choices to make about their treatment and care. These choices can be complex, and it is important that patients have all the information and support they need to be able to make fully informed decisions.
To support better communication between healthcare professionals and patients, Bristol-Myers Squibb has published the Talking About Melanoma Matters Discussion Guide to support improvement...s in the conversations that take place at the point of referral, diagnosis, treatment and living beyond melanoma.
The Discussion Guide sets out guiding principles for good patient-professional communication and is based on the results of the patient survey carried out in September 2018 as part of the Melanoma Patients Matter Project. Melanoma Focus has also made contributions to these principles, based on our experiences of supporting patients with melanoma.
The Talking About Melanoma Matters Discussion Guide can be found on our website at: https://melanomafocus.com/information…/ tamm-discussionguide/.
The project was initiated and funded by Bristol-Myers Squibb, while Melanoma Focus has provided experience and expertise in shaping the project and resulting Discussion Guide, alongside the British Association of Skin Cancer Specialist Nurses (BASCSN) and Melanoma UK.

Last year FIS Watford tragically lost Gavin Style, their MD, to melanoma. Along with Gavin's family who set up their own enormous fundraising drive, FIS themselves raised over £4000 by organising a coffee morning and quiz night; staff took part in individual challenges receiving matched funding from the company and the charity received generous individual donations in Gavin's memory. FIS Birmingham fundraised too at their summer party raising over £400. We're hugely thankful.... This year we were invited back to FIS Watford to give staff a talk about melanoma, the risks we all face and the protective measures we can take; raising #melanomaawareness. It's good to have you with us FIS. Thank you for becoming advocates of melanoma awareness and for supporting the work of Melanoma Focus. Our special thanks to Jane Hind for coordinating this event. Have a wonderful summer everyone. #melanomaawarenessmonth #CSR #melanoma #skincancer #corporatefundraising
