Scotland got off to a winning start at the BIIBC Gents International Series when they beat Wales by 145 shots to 101 in the afternoon match yesterday.
The Welsh rink skipped by Ross Owen gave our rink of Andrew Thomson, Callum Taaggart, Robert Grant and Colin Walker a real test but it was the Scottish side who edged the contest. The Welsh led by 16 shots to 14 with a third of the match remaining but ten shots in the remaining seven ends saw Walker's four get home by 24 shots... to 20.
The only Scottish rink to end up on the wrong end of the scorecard yesterday was the team of Ronnie Duncan, Graeme Donaldson, Derek Oliver and Alex Marshall MBE. They led by 14 shots to 9 after 16 ends but counts of three and four for Wales in the later stages saw them hold the advantage. The welsh still relied on luck to win their contest with a wild Dan Salmon strike on the last end moving the jack in the Welsh favour and being the difference in a 19-16 win for Wales.
Scotland play Ireland in this mornings match with England playing Wales at 3pm.
The overall table after match one is as follows - 1st England 2 points +48 shots 2nd Scotland 2 points +45 shots 3rd Wales 0 points -45 shots 4th Ireland 0 points -48 shots
The Rink draw for this morning is - Iain McLean v Ian McClure Darren Burnett v Andy Kyle Alex Marshall MBE v Gary McCloy Paul Foster MBE v Graham McKee Colin Walker v Andy Duncan Stewart Anderson v Stephen Coleman
