One of the highlights of our trip to Romania was the woodcarving school keeping traditional skills alive. Incredible to see young kids loving the craft. #FD202

Where would we be without George Bain, the 'father of celtic art'? His Methods of Construction' was published in 1951 and is still in print today, simply because it provides the best basis for understanding the mathematics and design principles in Irish, Northumbrian and Pictish medieval art. In preparation for delivering this year's Bain Memorial lecture, I'm visiting the George Bain Archive in Rosemarkie tomorrow, a Recognised Collection of National Significance for Scotland, in search of treasures! Photo of Bain's drawing of the Inverurie Pictish Horse by Groam House Museum, with my carving.

Hexafoil obsession continues! This one is based on the stone in St Ciaran’s Cave in Kintyre.

I've started a new page for the appreciation of the art of the West Highlands and Islands in the late medieval period. If you enjoy the work of the great West Highland carving schools during the period of the Lordship of the Isles, please join in! And share your photos.

I’ve been sketching a few hexafoil Cross-heads of late. Here’s a wee sandstone slab, carved with a hexafoil based on Cladh a’ Bhile in Knapdale. Speed-carved in the last 90 minutes!

Apprentice Dean’s first properly finished piece. A real cracker with a great look about it.

A stone I carved for Fiona and John Gray back in 2016 for a significant birthday. John is a keen cyclist and Fiona is from Morayshire so I incorporated a Pictish double disk bike and a Morayshire Pictish salmon below a crescent and v-rod in golden sandstone. The stone has now been built into the wall of their new extension.
