Peatlands Place in the Uplands – what’s the value of them for landowners? Topics covered clean water and carbon storage, grazing and forestry. Stabilising and improving the quality of peat in the hills makes ecological sense, but will it pay for crofters and farmers? Recreation and tourism brings in money from folk enjoying the hills but how do landowners benefit? Maybe a chance to support farmers by supporting wild landscapes through public funding? A lively discussion in the sunshine as part of the IUCN Peatlands Conference, hosted by Davy McCracken of SRUC and Anne Gray of The Heather Trust.

Great to be out at the weekend with Nick Carter St John Scotland MSI and students from St Andrews Uni Mountaineering Club, seeing at first hand the amount of learning and enthusiasm possible even in a sodden Glen Nevis and the Mamores. It's great what can be achieved through this St John Scotland - Mountaineering Scotland partnership. Look out for an article in the November edition of Scottish Mountaineer.

To be honest, in summer you can often wing it, but about this time of the year is when knowing what weather to expect can make a crucial difference to your day and to your plans. Weather's definitely on the turn in the mountains now. If you're looking forward to the white stuff but not entirely sure about it... get along to one of Heather Morning's great winter mountain safety lectures. Great fun and hugely educational too. Just what is Mend Our Mountains wanting to do on Beinn a' Ghlo? And what's in it for you in our Crowdfunder campaign? Great works and great prizes - just have a look and give what help you can. www.crowdfunder.co.uk/mend-the-cairngorms

Worth supporting? Across the UK the Mend Our Mountains Appeal is raising funds to repair 13 mountain paths. Richard Duckworth is aiming to raise £2000 by walking all of them, finishing with Beinn a Ghlo and Ben Vane in October. He's due to start in the Yorkshire Dales on Monday, but is already halfway towards his target. Can you help him get there - or even surpass it? Check out his JustGiving page here. Deterioration of a temporary detour path has meant walkers being advised to choose routes away from the Kilbo Path in Glen Clova.

Mountaineering Scotland supports the new report by Scottish Environment LINK calling for greater planning control over new vehicle tracks in the hills. Legislation has to move with the times and protection of our landscape is vital. Check out our story and a link to the full 'Changing Tracks' report. I’ve done two courses with mountaineering Scotland, winter skills in the Cairngorms, and Scrambling in Skye.

Both courses were very enjoyable and very professionally handled.

User

Highly recommend their navigation course, Di was an excellent leader and I certainly feel more confident heading out into the wilderness with a map and compass in hand. Thank you!
