Mull Of Galloway Lighthouse Description

The Mull of Galloway is Scotland’s most southerly point with far reaching sea views towards the Isle of Man, Ireland, Cumbria and Scotland.

The Mull of Galloway Trust were awarded the Dumfries and Galloway Life People of the year Award 2013 for best Community Project.

The Mull of Galloway Experience – Climb a Lighthouse, visit the Exhibition of Lighthouse History, chat to RSPB staff and volunteers and enjoy delicious food and drink at Gallie Craig Coffee House.

Whilst visiting the Mull of Galloway you can climb to the top of the working Lighthouse built by Robert Stevenson and established in 1830. The Lighthouse is 26 meters high and there are 115 steps to climb to the top to see the views and look out for gannets, dolphins, porpoises and even whales.
Learn all about the history of Lighthouse Keeping in our Exhibition.

Please note the tour to the top of the Lighthouse is not suitable for anyone suffering from heart, breathing or balance difficulties and that children or adults under 1m in height will not be allowed access, this includes carried children. Sensible footwear is required.

Every Sunday throughout the 2017 season there will be a demonstration and a switch on of the engines. This will take place between 1pm and 2pm and is included in the admission charge to the Exhibition.
Visit the Fog Horn and gaze at the views from the viewing platform.
We have an RSPB Visitor centre and reserve managed by RSPB Scotland at Scotland's most southerly point and we are a Site of Special Scientific interest. See gannets diving, kittiwakes, cormorants and many other birds. There are live cameras on the cliffs too filming the activity of nesting sea birds.
Enjoy a coffee and home baking at Gallie Craig coffee house.

Went out with my mum and daughter, was there pretty much first thing. Service in the Gallie Craig was brilliant, then took a wander up to the lighthouse and was greeted by the lovely lassie at the desk where you pay. Went up the lighthouse (believe me, my legs wish I hadn't lol) and had it all to ourselves. Member of staff in the lighthouse was very nice as well.

Never get sick of coming out here!

User

Well worth a visit fabulous place. We went on a beautiful sunny day and the views were stunning. We could clearly see Scotland, Northern Ireland, England and the IOM. The cairnryan to Belfast ferry sailed past within view and there is an unusual rock formation on the cliffs. The food in the cafe was good

User

We visit in 2015, it's a very well kept lighthouse with spectacular views all around with some lovely friendly staff we were also happy to receive our certificates, there is a small walk to a fantastic cafe with lovely items to buy. We will visit again this year with our latest editions to our family as I know my almost 2 year old will love this.

User

The views are spectacular and especially from at the top of the lighthouse, The cafe is really welcoming and inviting and the food was great would definitely recommend x

User

The kids (and the adults) enjoyed the lighthouse experience. We also had lunch in Gaillie Craig and we weren't disappointed. We have a 5 year old who has autism and all of the staff made an extra effort to ensure that he was made welcome and his needs were met. I'd highly recommend the Lighthouse experience and a bite of lunch afterwards.

User

Really enjoyed our visit. Everyone was very friendly and pleasant. Our 3 year old had a good blether with the lady in the exhibition where we bought the tickets too! Loved his certificate as well. We all made it up to the top also although we didn't know you could go outside ( not that I would have mind you)

Cafe was lovely. Very reasonable and nice home baking. Thanks for a lovely visit x

User

Really enjoyed my visit. I was over from NI for the day, had cycled down from Cairnryan and was doing a bicycle tour of the area. Port Logan and Portpatrick. It's well worth a visit to see Scotlands most southerly point. On a clear day you can see NI, the Isle of Man and the Cumbrian Mountains. Nice coffee shop and RSPB centre as well.

User

Outstanding views and wildlife at the Mull of Galloway. The lighthouse is excellent- staff are exceptionally friendly and full of local info about the mull and lighthouse. The view from the top is amazing! And we were very excited to get a certificate at the end (we are a group of adults age 24-58!) as a side note the RSPB centre was also excellent and the staff amazing there- another wealth of knowledge and incredibly friendly. Also enjoyed a coffee at the tea room- I can't recommend visiting the Mull enough- all staff/volunteers that we met were so friendly (must be that view making them so happy!) and knowledgable!

User

One of the best places on this planet. Can't wait to visit again to hear the foghorn !

User

It was amazing, the road down to the car park is single track and the cows are walking freely, but once you have parked up its a little gem of a place to visit, highly recommend going if over this side of the country

User

It was a great visit, topped by going to the observation point to see the nesting seabirds wheeling around hundreds of feet below. We were too late for the café unfortunately, but well worth the trip. There was a cow feeding her calf on the track out, which made for a humorous diversion whilst we waited for them to finish the meal! 😜

User

I loved it here! The views over the sea are spectacular and the massive cliffs so close. If you are interested in wildlife and birds this location is perfect. We had a picnic on one of the benches overlooking the Solway Firth. Blue sky and no wind. Perfect.

Then a few metres away is the lighthouse where you can look over the Irish Sea, and the gulls nesting in the cliffs. We saw a falcon hunting around here.

The cafe serves delicious cakes and food, and does really good coffee. There's a gift shop here too. We'll be back very soon.

User

Excellent place to visit and enjoy the unique feeling of having sea on three sides while gazing out towards the Isle of Man (and, just, Northern Ireland). Worth making the walk down to the viewpoint at the end of the headland beyond the lighthouse just for the amazing views. Very good coffee house and cafe a few yards away too. Recommended.

User

Excellent lunch on weds / ground decaf coffee best ever followed by a jacket potato with prawns& hubby had the double cheeseburger , both we're very enjoyable, and served by wonderful & polite staff!!

User

Excellent experience and amazing view from the top of the light house. Kids loved it and really proud when received certificates after claiming the top :- we had lovely weather and view was breath taking

User

Drove all the way from Ayr to here, and I have to say it was an amazing experience, the views from the foghorn absolutely stunning, nothing but sea for miles and miles , the tour guide at the top of the lighthouse was very informative and answered all our questions, would definitely come again, the weather was perfect for it, the scenery around is absolutely gorgeous

User

Amazing place to visit! The exhibition is superb with so much to do for all ages. My kids loved typing their names out in morse code! The lighthouse is superb. Well worth the climb for exceptional views from the top and some history of it all from the staff. Beautiful part of the world and well worth a trip.

User

Although the weather was wild and it was very foggy yesterday. I really enjoyed my visit. Climbed to the top of the Lighthouse, looked round the exhibition and went down to the foghorn. Also visited the cafe also. Well worth a visit.

User

When out on our motorcycles on Easter Monday we decided to travel to The Mull of Galloway including the Lighthouse, it entailed a 420 mile round trip from Preston.

We did the full tour of the lighthouse and museum which proved to be both interesting and informative. The staff there were very helpful and were eager to answer our questions.

There was a film crew in the immediate area filming for a movie and this made our visit even more interesting as there were a number of props which had been erected within the grounds of the lighthouse.

We made use of the cafe before venturing back home. All in all a very good destination to take in during a day out.
