As many people in these reviews we found that what M&C wanted from us in deposit when we moved out was excessive to say the least. 3 months after moving out and going through SafetyDepositScotland we got most of the money back as it was unjustified. This was a huge hassle.
Throughout the tenancy they were unprofessional and cut-throat with us. This is not a people friendly business. Previously we had rented with Clouds and O'Neill property in Edinburgh. They were much better than Murray and Currie, we encountered no such problems. DO NOT RENT WITH THEM!

Absolutely appalling service from beginning to end.I have never lost a penny in bond before.
Once you are in it is virtually impossible to get any repairs done. they take weeks to get anyone in and use cheap replacements
Having scrubbed my 1 bedroom flat on departure I have been slugged £270 for cleaning ...and a broken door handle( was not ever even wobbly)
A windowless bathroom with a tiny extractor fan resulted in some mildew on the 8 ft ceilings....Sorry, I am not a stilt walker, a small amount of dust on a skirting and they are claiming 8 hours worth of cleaning . Sounds like a complete con

Was very professional until having to deal with maintenance issues where the contact person showed a complete lack of understanding of the significance of the maintenance issue at hand and therefore demonstrated nothing but a patronising tone of voice.

Perhaps that is how they treat all their tenants, as second class citizens to their landlords.

Will not be using their company for future business, if you are considering renting in Edinburgh, you're much better off choosing to go with D.J. Alexander.

Absolutely horrendous experience as a renter!!! Don't use!!! Have rented with other agencies in the city and they are much better!

Where to begin? Well, lets start when we first saw the flat and Alex Blair, the agent, had clearly never been there before and knew nothing about how the flat worked or what was included. Of course, since there are few flats to rent in this country due to the housing crisis you can't really do much, can you?

When we moved in there was cat urine in the flat from previous tenants, it was not clean, we had to get a professional cleaner.

After signing a lease for six months we ended up staying for an extra seven. We were flat out rejected when we asked to leave the flat on a date that fell in the middle of a full month of rent and pay a pro rated amount (we asked with more than 2 months advance notice given to the agency). This was really not nice of them, even though, sure, we signed. But, you could give tenants a break, specially when we never were never late on payments or did anything inappropriate.

Then, as the move out date approached there were 7 separate visits to the flat to show it, which were really annoying, this never happened to us with Clouds or O'Neill estate agents.

Finally, we come to where we are now. Murray and Currie want to take half of our deposit away. The flat was left perfectly cleaned, we payed a professional cleaner to clean it, they claim wall damage and damage to the shower. I have pictures to prove it was clean and there was no damage, I am planning on going to court if it needs to go that far.

Renters Beware!!!

Just just wanted to say a big thank you to all at Murray and currie for making it easy to rent a property with you guys .You were very helpful and professional . The property was great . It had its odd maintence issue but nothing you didn't attend to quickly and efficiently . Thank you all again.

Great letting agency. Everything was done in a professional and timely manor. Their response time was quick when I did have questions or needed to turn something in. I didn't run into a single problem with them and am very very pleased. Would recommend them if you are in the Edinburgh area.

A shameless disgraceful company. Throughout the year, the agency never replied to calls after we paid the deposit. When we turned up, the flat was in a dirty state (carpet stained, floor tiles damaged, light bulbs missing), but the documents say everything is cleaned and fixed to a professional standard. I suppose this sort of professional standard can be compared to as just how professional this company is. One bed was missing in a furnished flat, which took this agency a week to sort out. We requested the company to amend the agreement that the place is not cleaned, in the end we were sort of settled. However, when we were moving out after a year, the huge bill for all the cleaning issue and damages "we did the the flat" is really shocking. They were asking us to pay them to "clean the flat professionally", basically most of the deposit is gone. I really wonder if they have cleaned anything this time, I wish the next tenant best of luck.

P.S. This agency said they will check on the tenants within a month of moving in on behalf of the landlord to make sure everything is going well. This has never happened, we were only ever contacted by the company because we were not paying the rent a few days before the agreed day of the month.)

I took a chance on purchasing the family home about 5 years ago when my Dad passed away.

I just want to say how happy I am that I chose Murray and Currie as property managers. I was really concerned about being a long distance landlord, living in Canada. M & C have done a great job in ensuring that only good reliable tenants are in the house and have made the whole experience of being a long distance landlord easy and enjoyable. I would have no hesitation in recommending their services to anyone. Edinburgh real estate has certainly been a great investment for me. Thanks to the entire M & C team.

Scum - you should avoid using this money grabbing company. Moved into a place they claimed to have been 'professionally' cleaned upon moving in. After moving out and leaving the place tidier than when we first moved in we were deducted £300 off our £950 deposit for a cleaning bill which is absolutely ludicrous. I offered up paying £50 extra every month above the asking monthly rent to secure moving into the place. My generosity has ultimately costed me and these sharks will bleed you of your money too. Avoid. 0 Stars is not even an option.

The good:

The management and senior leasing associates are very accommodating and care about your satisfaction as a tenant. They were able to set up a rental for international relocation without needing the tenant present in the UK, modified the lease terms due to special circumstances, and once the managing director became aware of the depth of my repair issues he followed up on all future issues personally.

The bad:

My new flat did not meet the repairing standard for the first three weeks, and did not meet the tolerable standard for the first two weeks. In this time, at one point it took three days from contacting the maintenance team to hearing from a boiler engineer to schedule an appointment. While I had no functioning boiler, authorization to purchase replacement parts took two business days, which means that I spent an additional five days without a boiler after the issue was diagnosed.

Murray & Currie have been renting my properties for around 5 years now, another agency were renting them before and they did not keep them up to my standards. Having just given them another property I was very impressed at how quickly they got it rented and at a good rate.
All properties will have issues but Abbey and the team always get onto me asap for my permission to solve the tenants' issues.
Murray & Currie have now also sold 3 properties for me and I have been very happy every time. Each flat has been under offer within two weeks and obtained an above average price for the area. I would recommend them all day long.

Murray & Currie have been managing my two properties now for 8 years and I am very happy with the service they provide. I have been fully let for that period with no voids at all in rental income. The staff are friendly and efficient to deal with and I would have no hesitation recommending this company to anyone.
