Our elders keep on reminding us to not drift away from “Siraat aladhina an'amta 'alayhim”. They continue to remind us of the ideals of the elders of this ummah, whom our Prophet Sallallahu alayhi wa sallam had declared to be the best.
For instance our Prophet Sallallahu alayhi wa sallam had praised Sayyiduna Shuraih al-Hadhramiy radhiallahu anhu for ‘not making the Qur’an his pillow’, implying that having preserved the Qur’an in his head, he does not sleep through the night, ...instead he stays awake to recite the Qur’an.
Having listened to our Prophet Sallallahu alayhi wa sallam praising Shuraih radhiallahu anhu:
Sayyiduna Uthman radhiallahu anhu used to complete the tilaawat of the Qur’an shareef in one Rak’at of Salaah.
Hadhrat Saeed b. Jubair r.a. completed the tilaawat of the Qur’an shareef in one Rak’at whilst he was inside the Ka’bah Shareef.
Imam Abu-Hanifah r.a., Imam al-Shafi’I r.a., Imam Bukhari r.a. would respectively complete two recitations of the Qur’an al-Karim daily in the blessed month of Ramadhan.
Wakie’ b. Jarrah r.a. used to complete recitation of one Qur’an every night.
Abdullah b. Idrees said to his daughter, ‘why do you cry? Your father has completed recitation of the Qur’an 4,000 times in this house’.
Abu-Bakr b. Ayyash r.a. once said to his sister pointing towards a corner of the house, ‘in that corner your brother has completed recitation of the Qur’an 18,000 times’.
Hadhrat Mugheerah b. Hakam r.a. used to complete one recitation of the Qur’an every day. Similar was the routine of Hadhrat Ataa b. Saaib r.a.
Hadhrat Abul-‘Abbas b. Ataa r.a. once said to Abu-Ja’far r.a. ‘it has been a routine of mine that I complete one recitation of the Qur’an shareef daily, and three recitations daily during the month of Ramadhan.
Imam Buwaiti r.a. used to complete the recitation of the Qur’an daily. In addition he would fast throughout the year.
For over five decades, it has been the practice of Hadhart Shaykh ul-Hadith, Maulana Muhammad Zakariya r.a. to complete the recitation of the Qur’an shareef daily in the blessed month of Ramadhan.
