In December 2017, Shirley Husband was asked by Ayrshire artist Steven Brown – lately of infamous ‘McCoo' fame - to create children's characters and stories, based on his much-loved paintings. It's been a crazy journey, but since obtaining the IP for the McCoo Family in April 2019, she, along with Maurice Hinds, started their own publishing company, ‘NaeBother', and ‘The McCoo Family' is the first series of books. Shirley was given a free rein to create her own unique rhythmic style, and vibrant, colourful picture books with an illustrator of her choice. Her business partner and good friend, Maurice Hynds, helped breathe life into over 70 characters, which all help in creating a love of reading, and Scotland, in primary and nursery schools across our country. Maurice is an amazing artist and illustrator, but also a very successful designer. He can work wonders in digital art, and is also hugely inspiring to children. In February 2019, ‘The McCoo Family' became a topic for Early Years Literacy in Scottish primary schools. This is just the beginning of what can be achieved to deliver benefits to our Education system. Each of the books hooks into an outcome on our National Curriculum, and features something unique and wonderful about Scotland. They have come to realise that what they are creating is instilling a strong sense of cultural identity and confidence in our youngest children, and is a truly exportable product for our country. We have allies and partners in Nicola Sturgeon, The Scottish Government, Scottish Enterprise, Early Years Scotland, Sir Tom Hunter, Scottish Rugby, Scottish Theatre, The National Trust for Scotland, Glasgow Art School and many more. However, our most important ones are the children and families themselves - not just in Scotland but also in communities right across the world.
