THE HISTORY OF NAPIERS

Napiers is an independent company with humble beginnings dating back to 1860. It all began in the Victorian era in Edinburgh. Our founder, Duncan Napier was born in 1843 and abandoned within hours of his birth. He was taken in by an innkeeper and his wife, who beat him and treated him little better than a slave

At the age of 9, he was apprenticed to a baker and found himself with a cough triggered by the flour dust that he simply could not shake off. Inspired by his mentor, John Hope, he left home at 15 and began to attend Scientific Botany classes in search of a cure for his cough. It was later when he joined the Edinburgh Botanical Society that his interest in herbs grew that he developed his famed Lobelia Cough Syrup.

The syrup was an instant sensation, and Duncan decided to become a herbalist. On the 25th of May 1860, he opened a herbal shop and the people of Edinburgh queued for hours to see him and get a herbal cure for their ailments. Nowadays, we supply herbal remedies to people the world over and continue to follow Duncan’s dream “to provide an affordable choice of natural health care for all people”.

We remain true to our past, developing combination herb formulas (known as the tonic herb principle) to treat the whole person and the whole body. We also make many of our medicines at traditional practitioner-strength dose levels.

Our mottos is TRIED • TESTED • TRUSTED and we live this daily. Our herbal medicines and therapeutic skin creams have been tried by generations of people, who have tested them and return to us decade after decade, who have trusted us and who still do. We are dedicated to the best of health and wellbeing through the use of herbal medicine & other natural therapies and providing a safe alternative to chemical medicine.

Here’s a cheery sight. The enormous yellow flowers of yellow skunk cabbage (Lysichiton americanus) in bloom in a Scottish stream. The root was once specially prepared and added to cough medicines as an antispasmodic for bronchial spasm and asthmatic coughing, although it’s seldom used today. #forgottenherbs #herbalmedicine #herbalism #knowyourherbs

It’s not just about eating less of high risk foods, it’s about eating more of the right ones. Eat more fruits, vegetables, whole grains, milk, calcium, nuts and seeds, fiber, legumes or beans, omega-3 fatty acids from seafood, and polyunsaturated fats, the good-for-you fats found in salmon, vegetable oils and some nuts and seeds. https://edition-m.cnn.com/…/diet-global -deaths-…/index.html…

The husk in the picture is our wild native Ribwort plantain (Plantago lanceolata). It's close relative Psyllium (Plantago ovata) is often sold in health shops for constipation. A teaspoon of husk adds a lot of fibre (but always take it with a full glass of water afterwards to keep it moving). Not only does it help increase fibre in your diet, reduce constipation and help blood glucose control but researchers have also found that it acts as a prebiotic and has a positive effect on many species of gut microflora. Here's an Open Access article that explains more about it https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles /PMC6358997/

Just a quick word about high doses of celery juice which has become popular recently - be careful. Celery has many great health properties and benefits but here are some cautions about taking it in very high amounts.
Stay out of the sun. The combination of drinking large amounts of celery juice and sunshine can cause your skin to change colour in a phototoxic reaction due to its psoralen (a furocoumarin) compounds. We’ve seen that in some people this can result in permanent ...facial dark marks and patches appearing. This hyperpigmentation is called phytophotodermatitis. Some people have even developed severe ‘sunburn’ after drinking celery soup.
Wash your hands thoroughly after handling celery juice before going outside as phytophotodermatitis can also affect hands and areas around the mouth where the juice has had contact with the skin. Celery allergies and reactions are also more common in people who use tanning salons.
While reasonable consumption of celery can be healthy and improve fertility especially in men, large doses can be problematic. Compounds like apigenin found in celery can have inhibitory effects on fertility (in cases of chronic use or high concentration). Some members of the celery family have properties - concentrated in the seed oils - that prevent a fertilised egg from implanting in utero and were once used as contraceptives. Celery leaf extract - where the compounds become concentrated - can have an inhibitory effect on the pituitary-gonadal axis and decrease the serum levels of sexual hormones. This may be due to the presence of phytoestrogens compounds in celery, which influences the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis. (There’s a link below to the full research paper on fertility studies.)
Coumarin compounds in the celery can reduce thyroid activity by blocking the conversion of T4 into T3 outside the thyroid gland and increase TSH secretion. It’s fine in a reasonable amount but, if you’re juicing over a head of celery a day, a sensitive thyroid may struggle in the same way as having a lot of brassicas.
Although celery allergy has been rare in the U.K. it is a far more common food allergy in France, Germany and Switzerland where celery and celeriac have traditionally been eaten more often, and among those with a pollen sensitivity such as hay fever. If your lips start tingling or swelling this may be an indication of allergy.
So keep healthy by having celery in your diet but don’t take it to crazy levels. Everything in moderation!

This study says it all really. A measured 60% decrease in pesticides in your body after just 6 days on an organic diet. As the winter draws closer, getting colder and wetter, make sure you support your immune system. Avoid every cough, cold and flu going around by making sure that you eat well especially foods rich in vitamins like green leafy vegetables and fruits. Use herbs like echinacea or elderberry to boost immunity or mushrooms like reishi or chaga, make sure your adrenals are supported if you’re run down or stressed with astragalus, ashwagandha or nettle seed, and if you’re not sure do pop into chat with our friendly, knowledgeable staff and herbalists at your local Napiers the Herbalists branch (Edinburgh, Glasgow or Bathgate).

As fennel flowers turn to seed, we celebrate this carminative herb. Carminative means soothing to the gut. Fennel tea or tincture helps bloating, gas, wind, fermentation in the lower gut and related pain. And it tastes great! What more can you ask for. #fennel #knowyourherbs #herbalmedicine #wildmedicine #plantmedicine #herbalist #herbalism

Picking St John’s wort as you can tell from our red hands! St John’s wort (Hypericum perforatum) is excellent for treating low mood and depression. It’s also excellent for pain in the nerves - such as shingles, or when you shut your hand in the car door :( When the flowers are infused in oil it turns a deep red colour... so next pic in two weeks while it macerates. #herbalism #medicalherbalist #herbalmedicine #plantmedicine #wildmedicine #knowyourherbs

Lady’s bedstraw (Galium verum) was used to ease childbirth and for uterine problems (the compound asperuloside can be converted into prostaglandins - hormone-like compounds that stimulate the uterus and affect blood vessels); it’s main use was to treat urinary problems, gravel, kidney stones and restore kidney function; epilepsy (France) and an ointment for the weary traveller. Like it’s close relative cleavers (Galium aparine) it is also useful for supporting thyroid function too.

So I went to napiers today to buy more off the starflower oil dry skin baby cream they have as its amazing for my daughter. To my utter disgust they have put the large 500ml tubs up by £5. The tubes that were only £8 before are now £12 and the smaller tubs off 225ml are still £19.95. Why??? Normally I'd buy the large tub and the tube but I was having to spend and Extra £9. Great product but the price increase is horrific and I will be taking my business too Amazon as they have the 500ml tub for £28. Disappointed.
