A good place to work. You will need to register to access the reading rooms. This does not operate like a normal library (cannot take books out, cannot bring certain items into the reading rooms). Perfect for academic research but maybe not for more classic library enquiries. The Central Library across the road would be better for that.

Good café and nice regular exhibitions downstairs.

A very nice old classic library. Wonderful to just stroll around if you like libraries and books

One of the great libraries in UK. Really helpful staff, a wonderful collection and work facilities and at the ground floor frequently changing exhibitions, bookshop and a cafe with scrumptious cake.

During our trip to Edinburgh and walking through this beautiful city we have noticed an advert in the window of Scottish Central Library, which made us to believe that ongoin exhibition might be devoted to Persian culture...We came closer and to our biggest surprise under the clearly Persian picture with a saying in Farsi we read the name: "Free treasures display. Images of India"... The description is stating:" this display showcases images of India"... is it?! I must say I am not very good in history but I did not hear that Iran or even Greater Persia has ever been a part of India, sorry if I am mistaken... I think whether it should be called differently referring to ancient South Asian region or otherwise used really Indian images...

The building construction began in 1938, interrupted by the Second World War, and was completed in 1956. The architect of the structure was Reginald Fairlie and the architectural sculptor was Hew Lorimer. The coat of arms above the entrance was sculpted by Scott Sutherland. It houses so many valuable historical documents and artefacts.

You can ask for just about any magazine and book a time to view. Seems a bit stuffy but the staff are really helpful.

A beautiful library. I attended during the map exhibition which was truly fantastic. Some of the areas feel like you are in a hospital, but the reading rooms are the gem of the place.

TIP: Register for a card and you can get access to the reading rooms yourself!
