Nhs Lanarkshire Paediatric Physiotherapy Description

What is physiotherapy?

Physiotherapy is a healthcare profession that promotes the health and well-being of all.
Physiotherapists are responsible for the assessment and physical rehabilitation of those needing treatment due to accident, injury, ageing, disease or disability.

What is paediatric physiotherapy?

Paediatric physiotherapy is the treatment and care of babies, children and young people from birth to 19 years.
Paediatric physiotherapists bring their generic skills as physiotherapists and have additional knowledge and experience of child development and of childhood disabilities.

What do paediatric physiotherapists do?

First we carry out an assessment and then offer a plan to suit the needs of the child.
This may include regular input or advice on exercises, play activities and handling your child. We may offer to provide equipment that may help your child.

We work closely with the family, other health professionals, educational staff and others who may be involved with the child.

Our aim is to find ways to help the child make the most of their abilities.

We see children in their own homes, schools, nurseries and clinics, whichever is most convenient.

Some conditions that we can help with include:
Walking problems
Coordination problems
Developmental delay
Neonatal care
Neurological conditions e. g. Cerebral Palsy, Head Injury
Congenital Conditions and syndromes e. g. Spina Bifida, Down’s Syndrome
Orthopaedic conditions e. g. Talipes, Torticollis, Plagiocephaly, Erb’s Palsy
Neuromuscular disorders e. g. Muscular Dystrophy
Respiratory conditions e. g. Cystic Fibrosis
Rheumatological Conditions e. g. Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis
Acute injuries e. g. post fracture, muscular or ligament sprains

ACTIVITY #14 DANCE PARTY
Put on some music and dance away- the more energetic the better! See who can do the weirdest dance move or jump about the most or if you are luckily enough to be able to see videos on your TV- try and copy the dance moves!
Below is a wee example with a song that will get stuck in your head! 😁😁😁

ACTIVITY #13 BUBBLE WRAP ATTACK!
Encourage your child or young person to try and pop the bubbles in any left over bubble wrap by using any means possible! For example this could be by jumping, using your hands or rolling over on your wheelchair or standing frame.
Time how quick they can pop them!

ACTIVITY #12 BALLOON KEEPY UPPY
Make a clear space in whatever room you are in. Get a balloon and play keepy uppy or pass it from person to person not letting it touch the floor! Get creative and make up rules, for example, only your left arm / right knee / head can be used to pass it and so on!
