Ninewells Community Garden

About Ninewells Community Garden

With flowers, fruit, vegetables, herbs, wildlife and orchard, our beautiful community garden in the grounds of Ninewells is open to all.

Ninewells Community Garden Description

Ninewells Community Garden lies in the beautiful arboretum of Ninewells Hospital, Dundee (near to Maggie’s). Our mission is to promote physical activity and good health through community gardening; in an environment where horticulture supports wellbeing, therapy and rehabilitation.

The garden includes wheelchair accessible paths, herbaceous borders, vegetable, sensory and physic gardens, small orchard with wildflowers, picnic area, wildlife habitat, polytunnel, children’s play area and beautiful garden room.

The garden is run by volunteers, with the support of a garden facilitator and is available at all times for public, patients, staff, community groups, and garden volunteers to attend: for picnics, walks and play as well as gardening and a range of other activities throughout the year.

Please do come and visit! We welcome involvement from any other community groups and are currently seeking volunteers: both to develop and maintain the garden, and to mentor gardeners who require additional support. We have an open volunteer session on Thursdays from 1-3pm (no experience necessary, no need to book). We have other volunteering opportunities throughout the week - if you would like more information, please contact facilitator@ninewellsgarden.org. uk or call 0754 074 6075

Join us for the Launch of the Scottish Doors Open Day at the award winning Leaf Room.
At 11.30am we begin the day with a welcome from the Director of the Scottish Civic Trust, Susan O’Connor.
From 12pm all visitors will be able to explore the garden and award winning Leaf Room, whilst enjoying refreshments from local businesses such as BUBU's, Gracie's, Fraser's, Coffee & Co. and others, which is accompanied by local pipe music.
... If you like you can join us for a FREE 30 min yoga session in the gardens and Arboretum.
Tours of the garden will take place throughout the afternoon and further musical entertainment will be provided by Liam Johnston on the acoustic guitar.
Further activities are happening throughout the afternoon.
All staff, patients, relatives, and friends are welcome to join us to celebrate the Scottish launch of Doors Open Days.
The Leaf Room was designed for patients, staff and visitors to Ninewells Hospital and Medical School. It sits beautifully in the landscape at the edge of an area of mature woodland just to the south of the hospital. The roof has the appearance of a folded leaf, which is tilted at one end to assist in the collection of grey water for recycling. The roof overhangs the main activity space which can be used for various purposes ranging from talks and concerts to children's sessions and quiet contemplation.
Gaby Laing, Heritage Officer at the Scottish Civic Trust said: "The Leaf Room totally encapsulates what the My Place Awards are all about: a beautifully and sensitively designed asset loved and used by the community. Modest in its approach, the Leaf Room truly delivers far beyond its remit. In 2018, all eyes may be on Dundee for the opening of the new V&A, but the Leaf Room goes to show how much Dundee already has to be proud of in terms of civic pride and architecture."
