We have a Ratty! I was by the pond edge yesterday doing some planting when a fat-bottomed critter waddled off in a hurry to be somewhere else. Looking like a cross between a guinea pig and a rat, it's a very welcome addition to our Norburton wildlife. I've borrowed the photo, but this chap is very similar to our own Ratty.
The soil has warmed up under the spring sun making the conditions perfect for trees and shrubs in the new borders and for perennials in the established beds. I love this time of year. Let the planting commence!
Wherever you are, whatever you do, be as kind to yourself as you are to others. Put your feet up, pour yourself a favourite tipple (or brew), and have a joyful, blessed and gentle Christmas from us all at Norburton. 🎄
There has been lot of rain in the last few days. The pond is brimming and the winterbourne running through the garden is tumbling along its stone-lined watercourse. We've taken advantage of sunny spells of warm weather to plant trees and shrubs and there is new growth showing already. Before we know it, it'll be time to start planting the new kitchen garden...
Despite the interesting weather the village has been busy preparing for Christmas. I like the rain. I like being able to snuggle down and listen to it playing against the windows, or sit with a good meal and friends at one of the pubs. Happy days at Norburton.
As the days are getting shorter and the first frosts have glazed the trees, people have been looking forward to next summer and are booking the Hayloft and the Shippen for their holiday.
While the new website and booking form is under construction, if you would like to drop me a line in Messages, I'll check availability for you. While the Shippen is pet-free, we welcome dogs in the Hayloft where they can join their Humans for a holiday in the heart of Dorset.
For all those touched by conflict.
Delighted to say that we will be welcoming visitors to Norburton from the 15th June, 2019. While the new website is being finalised, if anyone would like to contact me about cottage availability, just drop me a line in messages and I'll get back to you. #NorburtonHall #loveDorset
From where I sit writing this, I can hear the sea thrashing the beach and the wind racing through the trees. I love this time of year. #lovedorset #Norburton
Gentle autumn. #Norburton #lovedorset
Our first autumn at Norburton is full of colour and every day brings new scents on soft sea breezes. The lanes are quieter now, and the hedges draped in bryony and black-berried ivy. #lovedorset #Norburton
The new border will provide a splash of colour as we come down the drive. Digging it has certainly brought colour to my cheeks! #Norburton #amgardening
With a helping paw from Thegn, that's the last of the crabapples harvested and made into a variety of delicious jellies. I've added a new flavour this time around: Rose-apple. I think it'll be perfect with spring lamb. For winter feasts, I've concocted a Spicy Winter Warmer, and for Christmas, Spiced Port Wine & Apple. The next best thing to filling my kitchen with heavenly autumnal scents is sharing the results with family and friends. Can't wait! #cookingupastorm #Norburton #LoveDorset
The raised circular bed looked stunning during the summer but is now looking rather worse for wear. It has become infested with horsetail, which - while I admire its tenacious prehistory - is a bind in the borders. Think it's time it was given the boot and a new planting scheme implemented. Easier said than done on this heavy soil. #garden #terrifid #Dorset
lovely accommodation in a fantastic part of Dorset - had a lovely holiday!
We stayed at Norburton Hall in October and we found the place stunning. Beautiful and peaceful location in a true natural settings (including the chickens). Accommodation was comfortable and felt like being at home. Karen is a wonderful and discreet host. Great base for discovering the many beauty spots Dorset has to offer.
We had a really enjoyable Easter break staying in the cosy Dairy Cottage and found some great fossils along the beach.
We had a most enjoyable stay in the Dairy Cottage at Norburton Hall.Very relaxing, very pleasant atmosphere and only a few minutes from good pubs, beaches plus lots of wonderful scenery.
Karen as ever made us welcome again and we were reminded why we came here so often before the family started growing - glad you have the variety of cottages to accommodate the family growing over the years :-)
Ideal 'home away from home' from which to experience the best of Dorset and just relax - peaceful environment in lovely grounds with the atmospheric backdrop of the Hall itself. Easy walk through the village to Hive Beach with lots of great places to eat nearby. We stayed mostly on the Lyme Regis to Portland part of the coast this time and will return for more!
Had a wonderful week enjoyed the welcome, the gardens and the weather!
Very helpful recommendations for eating and walking loved it all
Thank you.
Had a wonderful three nights - superb accommodation - want to come back as soon as possible!!
Full of historical character and elegance in beautiful setting - it's a great place to stay in the heart of Jurassic Dorset
