A credit union is a non-profit making co-operative that is owned and controlled by its members. As a member you have a say in how the credit union is run.

Credit unions are community co-operatives, run for members by members.
Credit unions offer a range of financial products including savings and loans.
Credit unions offer free life savings or loan insurance.
Credit unions return any profits to members or reinvest them in the credit union. This means the profits stay within the community.
Under the Credit Union Act 1979 credit unions are required to promote responsible saving, borrowing and money management to members.
