***Suspected Strangles in Orkney***
We have been made aware of a suspected Strangles case in a bought in horse on the Orkney mainland. The horse is currently in isolation while we await results from diagnostic testing.
Strangles is an extremely contagious bacterial disease affecting all equine species and can be spread by both direct and indirect contact including, but not limited to, shared tack and water troughs. Clinical signs include a high temperature, coughing, nasal di...scharge and swollen lymph nodes however some horses may carry the disease without obvious clinical signs.
This once again highlights the importance of strict hygiene and bio-security measures as a matter of routine. Any new arrivals should be isolated for at least 21 days and particular attention to hygiene should be observed at shows and events. Horses should not be allowed nose to nose contact with any horse of unknown disease status and equipment and tack should not be shared.
We will post a further update as soon as any information is available however we would ask any of our clients with questions or concerns about their horse or pony to get in contact.
