Some photos from the 2017 Season

And another from Minister's, Beat 4.

Check out this fantastic panorama from the Long Pool and Junction on Beat 2.

17in of water overflowing the Loch Morie weir - happy days!

So here's the answer to "What happened next?"... https://youtu.be/8Sdw8pjb_14

A good spate yesterday, though mostly from the Blackwater tributary so the water was quite coloured for much of it. Running clear now though, so prospects look good for the rest of the week!

We had a film crew on the Novar beats yesterday. Keep an eye on the TV schedules in the New Year!

Like buses - you wait ages for a fish, then 2 come along! These 2 grilse were caught from the same pool in quick succession yesterday by Mike Munro!

Success for Hugh Tyser and Alfie Comber last weekend fishing on Beat 5.

A nice wee spate on Friday brought some fresh fish in. Scott Ramsay caught a 10½ lbs salmon on Friday, then these 2 yesterday - a 9 lbs salmon and 3½ lbs grilse - the first grilse off Novar this season!

User

More 'spring' salmon catches to report. Martin Golabek landed an 8lb fish from Beat 5 on Monday, and his brother Rikki (pictured) landed this 9lb fish from Beat 3 yesterday evening.

User

Peter McAllister with the 2nd of two double figure salmon he caught yesterday on Novar Beat 5 - this a cracker at 15lbs+!

The river Alness has a well-deserved name for its beauty and variety, compare upper beat 1 with the gorges of beat 2! Expert anglers and beginners can be well rewarded, and even a blank day will not be a disappointment ; just being there is a joy. Expert tuition is available if required, as are knowledgeable ghillies. Salmon fishing on the Alness is an experience not to be missed.

I have been fishing on the Alness on and off for over 30 years and it is, quite simply, the most beautiful river I’ve ever been to. With six beats of huge variety, fished on rotation over a week, you are always left wishing that there were more hours in the day and looking forward to returning!

In the last decade or so there have been many improvements carried out by fishery manager Roger Dowsett, and Novar Estate. However, it still retains its wild beauty and is not manicured in any way.

A true spate river, if you get the conditions right you can ‘fill your boots’ – my best week saw 9 fish landed. But with compensation flow available from Loch Morie, there is always the chance of a fish and it is renowned for being a ‘first salmon’ river. Roger is a brilliant tutor and guide and got my wife her first fish, my dad his first at the age of 83 and, this year, my nephew his first salmon as well – some record! My best mate and I have been coming back every year for the last 11 years and between us have landed 55 salmon – some years have been better than others but, such is the beauty of the river, it really isn’t an issue if we’re not catching that many fish.

This year was particularly memorable for me as I landed by biggest ever fish – a 20/21lb ‘crocodile’ in the Gorge on beat 2. A 40/45 minute tussle on an 11’3” switch rod that had the adrenaline pumping! I had a 14lb hen the day before so it really was a red letter week!

All in all I cannot speak highly enough of this river and, if I had to choose one river to fish for the rest of my days, without question this would be it! Roger at Novar Fishings is very helpful and will do his best to fit you in, even if it’s just for the odd day. Give it a go – you won’t regret it!!

First time I had fished the Alness in a few years. Loads of improvements and access is now excellent on Beat 4. Comfy hut provided good shelter from the rain for a coffee break and a great view of the pool. Roger deserves congatulation !

Plenty of water yesterday, but it was not a dirty spate at all.

Fast sink tips and brass tubes were the order of the day to get down far enough.

I will be back.

Fantastic setup. Gorgeous river. I'm lucky enough to fish it each year and I would recommend it to anyone.
