Biomass boilers work in a similar way to a wood stove or fire place; however, unlike a fire place, a biomass boiler is engineered to transfer its heat to a central heating system which can then provide space heating and hot water throughout an entire building. They are designed with microprocessors which control the amount of feedstock and air being supplied, ensuring extremely high efficiency rates for each burn (often 90% ). High efficiency means less fuel is used, which is great for the environment and extremely cost effective.

There are many fuels that can be used in a biomass boiler such as straw, manure, and other forms of agricultural waste. However, the most common type of fuel used in the UK is woodchip or wood pellets. Nuburn systems are fuelled by wood pellets as this is the most efficient, clean, and readily available fuel source .

While concerns over deforestation are legitimate, wood fuel can be harvested responsibly as a renewable resource when forests are managed and cared for properly. Forests which are too thick can be harmful to the natural ecosystem, preventing sunlight from reaching the forest floor and hindering the development of diverse vegetation and wildlife. When managed properly, a small portion of trees can be harvested bit by bit, allowing sunlight to provide nutrients for other forest life which makes for a much healthier woodland ecosystem. In addition to this, wood pellets are often made using recycled wood waste (usually sawdust) from sawmill and other wood products manufacture, ensuring that waste wood which would otherwise be sent to landfill is used resourcefully.
