The Waverley departing Oban today. A wonderful sight. What can't you see? The paddle wheels are connected and she had a small rudder. This means the master appreciates all the manouvering room available. Please ensure you give the Waverley sea room when she is approaching or departing a berth.

Dinghy found in Oban Harbour. At 1130 today a 3.5 m grey inflatable dinghy was found floating by the ferry Loch Striven in the middle of Oban Harbour. It was directly down wind of the Oban Bay Community Berthing landing pontoon. The dinghy is now being held by the North Pier Harbour Master, ready for collection by its owner.

A small quantity of oil, probably marine diesel, has been spilt into Oban Harbour over the weekend period, between North Pier and Railway Pier. The low temperatures have prevented it from evaporating as quickly as would normally be expected. Argyll & Bute Council and CalMac Harbours, supported by the RNLI, have acted together to clean up the diesel. The oil absorbent boom will be deployed for several days. There is no risk to the public. If anyone has information as to the source of the oil spill, can they contact the A&BC Harbour Master on 01631 562892.

User

All the major operators at Oban have been contingency planning to ensure that if there is an oil spill, anywhere in the bay, there will be a rapid response to containing and cleaning it up. Today this plan will be tested with an exercise. You may see equipment being deployed or hear 'chatter' on the VHF radio. This is all part of the exercise.

Small craft (such as kayaks, paddleboards, and sailing dinghies) can be difficult to see from the bridge of a large vessel.
During the day wear bright fluorescent yellow clothing.
When out at night, wear LED lights or reflective tape on your helmet, headgear, or shoulders, just as a cyclist would.
... Visit the Oban Harbour website for more information on how to 'Be Safe and Be Seen.'

Oban Bay is an exciting place to be – but it’s easy to get into trouble in the water. Stay safe with RNLI's essential safety advice. https://rnli.org/safety

User

Please note there are frequent ferry movements throughout the year, particularly in the summer, and mariners should keep a good radio watch on Ch16 & Ch12 and an all round visual watch. Other large commercial and fishing vessels use the North and South Piers.
