About Oonique

I design and make a range of unique 'OO'nique handbags hats and crafts from Shetland Tweed and Fair Isle.

Oonique Description

The Shetland dialect word for wool is 'OO' and each bag I have made is unique, hence the name OONIQUE.
I design an make the bags from pure Shetland wool Fair isle knitting and Shetland tweed. The tweed is made in Shetland at the Sandness Spinning Mill which is a family run business now in its fifth generation. The wool is washed, carded, dyed, spun and woven in the mill before the finished products are sold locally and exported across the globe.
I am self taught and started making crafts as a hobby quite recently. I have always enjoyed sewing and knitting. In keeping with all Shetland females of my generation, we were taught to knit at an early age as it was essential means of income for many families. I am proud of my Shetland heritage and keen to preserve and promote the Shetland traditional skills.
