About Orchard Tea Garden, Grantchester

We serve tea, coffee, cake and lunches through the year, come rain or shine, in a corner of England where time stands still as the outside world rushes by

Orchard Tea Garden, Grantchester Description

The famous Orchard Tea Garden serves tea, coffees and light lunches and is available for weddings and parties. It is open nearly all the year around come rain or shine (see web site for opening times)

For nearly 120 years it has been rite of passage for every new undergraduate at Cambridge University to walk or cycle along the Grantchester Grind, or punt upstream exchanging the formal surroundings of the Backs, for the peace and tranquillity of the meandering River Cam to enjoy home-made scones soaked in cream and covered in jam (or vice versa) at the Orchard Tea Garden

The Orchard is renowned for the huge number of famous people who have enjoyed its genteel setting. Its luminaries including Rupert Brooke, Virginia Woolf, Bertrand Russel, Ludwig Wittgenstein, E. M. Forster, John Maynard Keynes, Alan Turing, Ernest Rutherford, and Watson and Crick to name but a few. By sitting under its trees, and sharing in the great English tradition of afternoon tea, one is following in the footsteps of generations of Cambridge students.

Deliberately, the Orchard Tea Garden remains of a bygone era; a corner of England where time stands still as the outside world rushes by.

FAO those who are attending........... If you would like to Pre-Order one of our picnics, could you please contact us in the next 24 hours! Thank you!
‘We will remember them’ – an invitation.
Once again, on 4th August, which is the anniversary of the start of World War I, we will be lighting candles throughout the Orchard Tea Garden at 8.43pm - “the going down of the sun” to remember the dead and injured in all wars. As the Grantchester Church clock strikes 11pm, we blow out every candle, as this is midnight in Europe. It is the exact time hostilities began. The British Foreign Secretary, Sir Edward Grey, said to a friend, on the eve of the war: “The lamps are going out all over Europe. We shall not see them lit again in our life-time.”
This is the one evening of the year when we invite visitors to bring their own picnic to the Orchard so they may sit quietly with us in the candlelight and listen to some timeless music from all the wars over the last one hundred years. As in the past we will be opening the servery in the evening should anyone wish to buy drinks or cakes with the profits from our sales being donated to the British Legion.
We have a Limited Number of Free Tickets Available. If you would like some, please email us at events@theorchardteagarden.co.uk
This will be a very special evening.

Visiting The Orchard is like going back in time, it's a very tranquil place to be and you'd never think you are a few minutes outside Cambridge!

The deckchairs are wonderful and relaxing and the scones are to die for!

I take all my visitors here to chill and come here whenever we can.

User

The orchard at Grantchestet Cambs is iconic England where time stands still it is a must to visit, relax and step back into a bygone age of beauty, peace and calm there as well as partaking of the delightful food and dtink to be obtained there. Please dont miss out on a trip to this delightful place.

User

The Orchard is the most wonderful place to go and relax. Service is excellent and a very good choice of food and drinks. Highly recommend it, one of my favourite places to go on a lovely summers day

User

Not sure if this a quintessentially British place but it feels like it to me. Where else would you be able to sit on deckchairs in an orchard whilst eating a cream tea with English Breakfast tea? We went there recently with close friends, when the weather was scorchingly hot, and sat in the shade for at least two hours putting the world to rights - bliss. Try the fruit scones, they were full of fruit and moist, delicious! Please try the Orchard, you will not be disappointed but do go on a hot, sunny day if at all possible so you can sit in the orchard!

User

Lovely place to relax and enjoy tea and cake or something more filling. On hit sunny weekends gets very very busy with long queues in the cafe.

A couple of miles out of Cambridge and you are in the quiet and tranquility of the countryside.

User

I love goin' to the Orchard....the food is always scrumptious. I like that it's open all year. Great place to be quiet and contemplative. The history of it enthralls me too.... all those years ago, Rupert and his friends just chillin'....as I do today.

User

Gets very busy in summer but beautiful place your chill in the good weather and the food is so nice and of course the cakes. :-)

User

Fabulous visit to the tea garden yesterday.. It gets better each time I go... Perfect for our changeable English weather... Lunch inside in the pavilion and then cream tea in the garden when the sun came out.

User

Fabulous food cooked from scratch for all our lovely Red Hat Society, Christmas lunch.

30 ladies attended and all raved about the the choice of venue. Good parking, curious staff, hot delicious food and room decorated and ready. Booking for next year and will have more chapters join us.

I am deff going bk 4 my soup & carrot cakex im giving 4 star rating not 4 foof or comfort but 4 the whole lovely packagexx

User

Visited for afternoon tea on a pleasant Saturday in October, it was lovely to see so many people still enjoying the deck chairs in the orchard garden. Scones were delicious, as was the tea and good value for money with the car park fee refunded. Only comment would be tables took a while to be cleared and we had to choose an other table to the one of preference but it didn't spoil our experience and I would defiantly return.

User

Lovely on a sunny afternoon, plenty of seating and space for toddlers to explore. Great to have soy milk offered with the tea too. If only the scones could now be made with it you'd be on your way to a happy vegan afternoon tea!

User

It is not perfect, but on a sunny day it sure gets close! The setting is stunning and the quality of cake is great - I'll admit, I am not a tea/coffee drinker though so I cannot comment on that.

User

Food is good, if slightly overpriced. Shame about the very high car parking charges these days, but can understand why charges have become necessary. I would like to see a separate part of the Orchard for dogs, as trying to relax with the sound of yapping and barking close by is somewhat difficult. However, it is a very unique place and I wouldn't like to see it change too much.

User

Visited on a lovely sunny day and say in the orchard. Lovely place and the food looked lovely only we didn't eat as we had had breakfast at our hotel. My only criticism is that the hot chocolate could have been hotter and it was rather sweet for my taste. Other than that a pleasant half hour and we got the price of the car park refunded on our drinks.

User

This is a wonderful place for tea in the summer when you can sit in the Orchard. It is peaceful and I like to think of Rupert Brooke and his friends when they were students at Cambridge, cycling to Granchester.

The tea rooms are rather chaotic. For years they have used silly milk jugs with no spouts and the milk spills. Please replace these!!

User

Took my nan here last week. And it was awful not traditional at all cakes were on display wrapped in cling foil and customer service not great . Food poor and nothing special at all, and yet the tea room in St Neots is amazing and fresh .
