About Orkney Farmer

NEW FARMING MAGAZINE COMING SOON!

Orkney Farmer Description

We are planning to publish a new magazine devoted to farming which is the backbone of the Orkney economy. We feel farming deserves to get a better recognition within the local community and that is why we have decided to launch a brand new magazine which will provide that focus and reflect the importance of agriculture and its associated businesses to Orkney.

The new magazine will be simply called 'Orkney Farmer' and will contain news and features which we hope will be of interest to local farmers and the wider community in general. People will be central to the ethos of the magazine – from the individual farmer telling his or her life story and how experience has affected their lives; to the local supplier who can offer farmers the latest advances in technology to ease their workload or save their time.

The Orkney Farmer team consists of:
• Award-winning photographer Ken Amer (Orkney Photographic)
• Reporting staff Brian Flett, David Hartley and Robert Leslie
• Design and layout by iDesign

Initially, the intention is to bring out Orkney Farmer every two months from March /April 2012 until we gauge demand, but depending on the level of interest the frequency could be stepped up to appear monthly.

It will be available FREE from local outlets or downloadable from www. orkneyfarmer. co. uk

Welcome to the thirty nineth issue of Orkney Farmer.
In this edition we cover all the shows with the serious side and the not so serious side of the county’s agricultural shows with the customary and all important reports and photographs but also the lighter side of showing. How to cover a silage pit in one and a half hours Young Farmer style, Orkney grown botanicals used to produce Gin, Boys Ploughing Match, Orkney Region of the NFU Scotland centenary dinner, exclusive inte...rview with the worlds most famous Auctioneer and loads more.
We, as Orkney Farmer, have a few “firsts” to tell you about as part of a restructuring program we would like to present to you. It isn’t rocket science but it is changes, which I hope you will approve of.
 We have David Flanaghan writing for Orkney Farmer. David is top of his class when it comes to writing. Based in Kirkwall David has been freelancing for Orkney.Com as well as writing books , TV and PR work.  A prize Crossword will now be a regular feature in Orkney Farmer. All the clues and subsequent answers are all Orkney farming based. Most answers, but not all, will feature somewhere in the issue the crossword is published in. And the prize? A years subscription to Orkney Farmer magazine.  The last of our firsts is one I introduce you to with a little nervousness, to say the least. Through a gradual process of elimination I will be writing a lot of the articles’ for the magazine. I have been surrounded by journalists all of my working life so hopefully my experience with them will reflect in my writing. Of course in farming there are on going serious issues but I would like to bring you the lighter or fun times farming has to offer. All I would ask is if you can bear with me, as this is a new and challenging time for me.
With the valued support from the advertisers, shops, contributors and the readers Orkney Farmer will continue to support and promote the Orkney farming community, after all Orkney is farming.
Ken Amer
