Overton - West Kilbride Description

Update:
Devastated to announce that we are closed to the public from 1 August 2017 due to an annual increase in business rates of £5, 500.

Our story prior to August 2017:

Overton is a converted, listed Victorian church and church hall, home to Timberbooks and Ayrshire Tea House.

Timberbooks was established in 2007 and sells quality second-hand, antiquarian and new books. We purchased Overton in November 2013 and continue to renovate the property around the business.

We served our first tea and scones as 'Ayrshire Tea House' in the hall in July 2016.

At Overton we also host literature, art and music events. We can seat 150 theatre-style in the sanctuary and about 50 more informally in the hall.

Thursday, 20 September 2018: Author Nicky Singer visits North Ayrshire Schools
Is the answer to global warming to 'head to Scotland and take a gun'? How would you feel if Ardrossan harbourside became the new 'Calais Jungle'?
We were absolutely delighted to be asked by the Learning Community Librarians at St Matthew's Academy, Saltcoats and at Ardrossan Academy to make books available to pupils during visits by author Nicky Singer.
... Nicky discussed her career as a writer, her inspirations and her books, the latest of which is 'The Survival Game'.

Friday, 14 September 2018: Tidelines Taster: Michael J Malone book launch
Many thanks to Specsavers in Irvine for sponsoring the launch event for Michael J Malone's latest book 'After He Died'. The hosts and hospitality were wonderful, the seats were all full and the author was entertaining - oh, and we sold lots of books. 🤗📚🤗📚🤗

4 August 2018: West Kilbride Scarecrow Festival
What can I say that wouldn't invite retaliation? Except:
1. We won!! (1st Prize in the 'Business' category) 🏆
... 2. It's the only use I've found for second-hand Reader's Digest Condensed Edition books 📚
3. A retired nuclear engineer has many untapped craft skills 🤗

15-17 & 24-25 June 2018: Fundraising
Spent two weekends helping out at a 'de-cluttering event' at South Banks House, Portencross, to raise money for Ayrshire Hospice. So much for de-cluttering: guess who bought all the books and dvds that were left at the end of these fundraisers? Was I really heard to say that 'you can never have too many books'?!

Sunday, 6 May 2018: A day off - a day out!
We popped down to the Boswell Book Festival at Dumfries House and were priviledged to be at the Anthony Horowitz session. If you ever have the opportunity to join this author for one of his events, we can't recommend it too highly! Hugely entertaining and informative 📚📚📚📚📚

Friday, 19 January 2018: The inaugural Tidelines Poetry Taster
We enjoyed a dash of wit, a taste of haggis and a warming dram alongside our bookselling, in preparation for Burns Night,. Two poets, Sheila Templeton and Michael J Malone, both award-winning writers, read from their work in Scots, English and Doric. There was an open-mic spot for local poets too, including West Kilbride's own Ruth Anderson.
Tickets are available now from Tidelines for their January 2019 event. We'll be there - we hope you will too!

Information about Timberbooks was previously on our 'Overton-West Kilbride' page. This new 'Timberbooks' page will be dedicated entirely to our bookselling business. Once we've caught you up on some of what we've been doing so far this year, we'll start to post news and up-coming events as soon as information becomes available.
