About Palmers Brewery

Independent brewery based in Bridport with more than 50 pubs in the glorious South West of England.

Palmers Brewery Description

Palmers: Brewing finest ales since 1794. In 1794, Dorset rope and net makers the Gundry family built a brewery on the banks of the River Brit in Bridport. In the late 19th century, two Palmer brothers – John Cleeves and Robert Henry – bought the operation and its pubs and gave it their names: JC & RH Palmer. Today, their great grandsons John and Cleeves Palmer work in the company and Palmers Brewery remains among the best of small independent brewers.

The original Old Brewery - famous as the only thatched brewery in Britain - is where the beer is still brewed to traditional methods with the finest ingredients. Palmers' pubs include some of the best-known and best-loved in the South West and are found in pretty country villages, deep in Hardy Country and on the World Heritage Jurassic Coast.

A brewery tour of Palmers historic brewery buildings allows visitors to see each stage of the brewing process and taste the Palmers five fine draught ales:

A week ago we were joined by John & Geraldine from The Ropemakers and Chris & Rachel from The Bicknoller Inn on a trip to Rioja hosted by Bodega Ontanon and Boutinot Wines in recognition of their work selling wine this year. It was another fantastic trip full of memorable vistas, dinners, lunches and of course, the great wines from Rioja of Bodegas Ontanon.
If you would like an opportunity to taste the fabulous wines of Ontanon a line up will be on show at Palmers Wine Store annual tasting on Wednesday 21st November, contact the Wine Store for more information or if you would like to attend, info@palmerswinestore.com 01308 427500

We've been having regular holidays in the Bridport area for more than 20 years, and have always enjoyed Palmers range of ales in various pubs around the area. But we only got round to doing the brewery tour this week. It was a thoroughly enjoyable experience. Ian, our tour guide, was friendly and informative, and gave us a clear indication of not only the processes involved, but also the ethos of the company. Attendees on the tour are treated like adults, which is refreshing, and the tastings of the company's products are appreciated.

One further thought. Over the last year or so the company had added Colmer's Ale to the range - 4%, Citrus, hoppy, light colour. It's a fabulous beer, and we're hoping it will be a permanent addition to the range, as it's been missing from the range until now. A great company!

We had the pleasure of looking after one of palmers pubs whilst it was between tenants and you could not wish to work for a better company, nothing was too much trouble.

We have been in the pub trade for over 24 years and have worked for many different pub co's and breweries and can whole heartedly recommend Palmers brewery as a business partner for anyone wishing to run one of their establishments.

Must be one of the nicest breweries in the country. Great beers too. The brewery tours are very informative and well worth visiting, even if you don't like beer. Lovely people too.

User

Lovely informative tour, guide a delight, got to taste ginger beer as well as actual (so worth doing if you're not that into beer itself) - and quite accidentally, we met Mr Palmer himself!

User

Bob, who took us around made the whole tour interesting and he was very informative

Needless to say the beer tasting was very enjoyable too ( I do like Palmers Beers) and I must say that Palmers Wine store is a treasure too - well worth a visit.

User

I would like to thank Palmers for a fantastic tour a few weeks ago . It was specially laid on for us on a Saturday and although not as many people turned up as expected it was great . Very informative . Enjoyed it so much that we are going to do another one in the week when the brewery is working .

User

Great tour. Lots of history and talk about brewing. Generous tasting afterwards and a free glass to take away. Good value, book on line for a small discount

User

Great tour - very informative guide who provided interesting historical facts about the brewery over time - wine store staff very well informed - tasting session at end and souvenir tankards capped off the tour a treat:)

User

Brewery Tour was extremely informative and well presented. The staff in the Wine Store are very courteous and knowledgeable about their products. The place is really worth a visit.

User

A very informative chat and Tour by Dave. The time flew by and was a great experience. It was finished with quite a large taster and a glass tankard as a keepsake. Thank you.

User

5 stars you will not be disappointed, even if you don't like or drink beer like my missus, she still found it entertaining and got to sample some palmers cider

User

Obviously made a purchase seeing as my name was all over the labels. Loved their light ale and enjoyed meeting the owner

User

A change of head brewer and change in recipes gave much needed improvement in taste of the beer range. I went from being despairing of the beer quality to being an avid drinker of Dorset Gold and Tally Ho. Quality is great now - can't remember last time I sent a pint back. Prices are very high for a town like Bridport £4 a pint in some pubs - that's for a beer brewed down the road by employees earning less than £9ph. A shame that such a beautiful brewery and end product should be tainted by that most basic of human instincts - greed.

User

Who’d a thought it, Glastonbury. Great pub run by absolute scum. Management couple barred from most other pubs in town. Sit there drinking in the main bar area being obnoxious to customers. Vile. Get a grip guys as a company.
