About Paperback Conservation

Restores and Conserves Works of Art on Paper.

Paperback Conservation Description

We established our Studio in January 1998, and as a long-standing member of The Institute of Conservation - the aim of our work is to provide modern conservation of the highest possible standard both for flat paper objects and bound material.
For those seeking more than a few words of advice, we are also delighted to offer a full consultation service.

The range of objects that we work on covers all fields and time periods: from modern prints for mounting and framing to complex work on original hand-coloured atlases from the 1500s; delicate 20th Century pencil sketches on bank paper to historical film memorabilia. Objects that carry a more sentimental - as opposed to purely financial - value, such as newspaper cuttings and marriage certificates are just as important to us.

The service that we offer includes the storage and mounting of prints, documents, books, drawings posters and watercolours.

Treatments may include:
● Dry cleaning to reduce superficial dirt
● Washing to reduce acidity and to prepare the paper for further
conservation
● De-acidification to combat acid deterioration, both present and future
● Mending of tears - and brittle paper reinforcement by backing with museum-grade tissue
● Filling areas of paper loss
● Consolidation of flaking or insecure media and removal of mould
● Tape and stain reduction
● Storage and mounting
● Advice on old and new frames

Our work is benign, acid-free and reversible. But we are not just technicians: the artistic eye, the scientific mind and the caring heart of the historian all come into play.

We do not have a formal fee structure, as each venture is assessed
individually. This is a bespoke service: materials are often expensive because they have been created with care. but there is usually more than one way to approach a project: we would always be pleased to discuss a course of action best suited to your resources and the object's needs.

By Appointment Only.
