Weights or Cardio for that 'toned' look ?
I was going to write a lot of in depth information regarding this question but I'm going to keep it simple .
Toning up - you need muscle and less fat than you have just now .
... Cardio may burn more calories at the time but weight training helps your body keep burning calories up to 24 hours after a workout .
Now, cardio will help you lose fat (only if you are complementing that cardio with a diet that allows you to be in a calorie deficit) but you are not going to build muscle so you won't get that toned look. In fact, more than likely you are going to end up losing muscle .
Proper weight training is going to help you build muscle whilst still burn calories to help complement your calorie deficit .
Truth is, many people just don't know how to weight train. It's a comfort thing - going on that treadmill or cross trainer for 45 mins then heading home. That's totally fine .
Plus, many people go to the gym, do some cardio, burn some calories then eat rubbish after as they have "deserved this slice of cake". So, it's virtually pointless. At least if you did weights, you'd build some muscle .
Now, I'm not saying don't do cardio. Obviously it's good for your health but who actually likes doing cardio every single gym session? If you're wanting that toned look and are serious about it then here's my advice :
1. Minimise the amount of cardio you are doing 2. Learn how to weight train and do it 2-4 times a week 3. Eat a high protein diet and watch how many calories you are consuming 4. Don't binge at weekends .

"I eat healthy all the time but I'm still not losing weight"
Classic!
I hear this one loads of times.
... "I had 2 fried eggs and a slice of toast in the morning, a chicken salad at lunch, a protein bar, a protein shake and chicken, rice, veg for dinner"
That's amazing.
Then comes the:
"I had 5 teas throughout the day and 5 bits of fruit"
Still ok, right?
Things people forget to say and consider:
1. The oil used to cook the eggs and the "light scraping" of butter you put on the toast. 2. The dressing on the salad 3. The marinade on the chicken. 4. The amount of rice actually consumed (you don't truly believe how quick these calories add up) 5. The amount of milk in the teas 6. Fruit sounds good but that's probably added at least 500 calories to your day.
This diet sounds really healthy but what's wrong with it? Not once have you considered the amount of calories you've consumed.
It doesn't matter how healthy your diet is, you can still gain weight eating "healthy" foods.
You could eat lettuce and gain weight if you ate enough throughout the day but you could lose weight eating 3 Big Macs throughout the day.
Bit extreme but do you get my point?
It's all about calories to lose weight/fat. Nothing else.

Eating after 6pm will make you FAT !
Ok...not true but now I have your attention, let me go into more detail about why this isn't true .
So, let's say most people consume their calories between 7am-9pm. That's a 14 hour window which probably consists of 3 main meals and some snacks .
... Now, guidelines state that woman should have 2000 calories and males 2500. This is purely a guideline and will most likely not apply to you .
Tip: If you unsure how many calories you should be having a day to maintain weight, you can find loads of calorie calculators online which can help you out .
The only reason people say you will get fat if you eat after 6pm is because you are more likely to binge at night, not in the morning (ice cream, pringles, chocolate) .
How many of you eat well during the day, go home after work, have dinner then snack until bed ?
If you don't eat after 6pm, you're obviously more likely to not gain weight as you've cut out 500+ calories from your day BUT if you watch what you eat and stay within your maintenance calories right up until bed then you won't get fat .
And NO, carbs just before bed will not make you fat .
Plus...who actually likes going to bed starving and how is that sustainable ?
So, eat after 6pm but just be careful what you eat and how much .
