It is a major change point for trains north but needs more faccilitys espisaly on platforms 5-7 as no waiting room and fully open to the elements, can get very cold.

This is a fairly depressing railway station. It's one of the hubs for trains in Scotland, with most routes passing through it.

It's a confusing place, with random staircases and curving corridors leading you round in circles like an Escher painting. The main concourse was probably once grand, with lots of nice ironwork and buildings. Now the buildings are mostly empty and the whole thing has been roofed over with yellowing perspex. The overall effect is of an abandoned village submerged in a murky loch. It seems to be cold all year round too. It always gives the impression of being too big and a bit empty, just adding to the effect.

At some point someone thought it would be a good idea to add an ugly concrete box as an entrance area. They were wrong. This houses the ticket office, which always seems to have dead pot plants adding to the ambiance.

The rather poor quality cafe has recently been replaced with a Costa franchise. So at least you can get a decent cuppa and a muffin to go with your existential despair. They get an extra star for that.

There is a curious optical illusion which means you can see trains approaching platform 7 (North) from quite a long way off, giving a wee bit of false hope whilst you plan your escape.

Nice little train station with character from back in the day.

User

Not much life about it......very bland, could do with bringing up to date ...cafe etc

User

Fairly dire! A few hard benches outside and a tiny outside coffee stall - with nice staff, though. But you can't even get a sandwich: the sign saying sandwiches came before the sandwiches!

User

Doesn't really have any good facilities, only a small cafe. Surprisingly nice architecture though.

User

Fairly basic facilities, but interesting architecture.

I like this station as it's the gateway to the highlands
