Following the release of the “Pilates “name as a generic exercise method by the US courts in 2000 there became an explosion of “Pilates” teachers in the UK and worldwide. While the loss of the court case raised awareness of the method to the general public and created an increasing demand for Pilates Teachers much of the real work of the Pilates method or ” controlology” has been lost. In order to try to protect the integrity of the full method which includes Reformer, Cadillac, chairs, barrels, mat, and accessories such as magic circle, foot correctors etc. the Pilates Teacher Association has been founded. The association will work to protect the public and service users to ensure that each Pilates Teacher has the appropriate skills and knowledge to deliver a Pilates lesson. This is a not for profit organisation and full membership will be open to Teachers who have completed a minimum of a 450 hour comprehensive qualification, Associate membership for anyone who has completed a matwork programme and is part way through a comprehensive Pilates course, Matwork membership for anyone holding a UK level 3 qualification in Matwork from a lineage led comprehensive school and student membership for anyone else wo currently takes lessons or has an interest in protecting the Pilates Method and the public. We are currently working with UK and devolved Governments EU Active, Skills Active and CIMSPA in to ensure that anyone involved in setting standards is fully informed on the method and can have worldwide application.
