Today's walk: at 4pm we decided to drive to Glen Affric and by 5pm we were already walking to summit Beinn A’Mheadhion - it was a moody early evening and the skies were amazing. Such an easy way-marked path to start with and then we veered off, off track. It's a short walk to the summit from the car park - so amazing views from quick gains.

Who would have thought this! We think Inverness and surrounding areas is cool to visit but it's now crowned the Most Cultured City in the UK!
In a search for the UK's most cultured city, TicketSource recently carried out a study including 68 UK cities. Inverness was revealed to be the top destination for a cultural staycation with the most cultural attractions per square mile - an average of 11.26 attractions.

For an adventure experience, we can highly recommend you check out Liquid Footprints - they offer canoeing on the lochs, sea kayaking, gorge scrambling and mountain guiding, to name a few. They are geared to families and can tailor make a trip to your requirements. And they are even dog friendly - take your dog in a canoe, how fab is that!
Jimmy and I were lucky to have an afternoon canoeing with Chris on Loch Achilty, followed by afternoon tea. What an experience! Chris is ...an amazing instructor, very friendly, helpful, knowledgeable and a great story teller. After our trip on the loch, he set up a table with tablecloth, china cups and we had (veggie and vegan) sandwiches, scones, brownies, cakes and a hot cup of tea. Yum! These foodie experiences are a speciality of Chris.

We are so lucky to have Reelig Glen right on our doorstop. You can walk there in about 20+mins or a super quick drive. Lots of circular walks through old conifer and broadleaved woodland boasting some of Britain’s tallest trees. A wonderful log cabin, wooden xylophone, balance trail, river, waterfalls, and secret paths. Lovely at anytime of year and in any weather (particularly stunning autumn colours..). High chance to see red squirrels too. We took a wee dog walk there today.

Rain, rain, and more rain. That's what we've had for the last 3-4 days. The grass is so long! Wonder if I can get it cut before the next guests arrive tomorrow..
That said, not only does the rain make the wonderful Scottish whisky, but it gives us our glorious waterfalls. Walkhighlands gives us their tips for the best in Scotland. We love Plodda Falls, near us at Glen Affric; and Falls of Foyers, Loch Ness. We would also add Divach Falls, near Drumnadrochit.

How fabulous is this new balance trail at Upper Reelig Community Wood, walking distance from Pinewood. This gives old and young alike the opportunity to get off the main path, test their balance and pause to enjoy the wind in the trees. You can find it by going to the upper carpark, taking the path directly ahead through the timber stacks and taking a left turn. Follow the path and you’ll find the trail on your left. Enjoy!

Today I was a guest aboard Dolphin Spirit, cruising up the Moray and Beauly Firths, looking for dolphins and otters! Nothing better than checking out the tourist attractions to recommend to guests. Sadly we didn't see any dolphins but it was great to see Inverness from the water, and North & South Kessock, go under the Kessock Bridge and see the Affric mountains in the distance. I even got to steer the boat! Thanks to Dolphin Spirit Inverness and Visit Inverness Loch Ness for the opportunity and I highly recommend to guests!

We are so lucky to have fabulous photographs adorning our walls courtesy of a John Muir Trust Landscape Photographer of the Year! Mind you, he is the father-in-law, how lucky are we. Take a look at these.
Roy Slaughter also runs another family business, The Poor House - a quirky traditional tin house on the North Coast 500 route (NC500), near Tongue, where you can see more of his photos. The Poor House sleeps 6 (dog friendly), stunning location, log burner, walk to the beach.
We do sell the photos hanging on the walls at both Pinewood Steading and The Poor House, but message me if you want to see more and are interested!

Today is World Whisky Day and where better to raise a dram than in Scotland! And it may be dreich today, or indeed very rainy. But hey - it’s the rain that makes the whisky! 😍😂
Did you know the word whisky comes from the Gaelic 'usige beatha' which means ‘water of life’.
Why don’t you book a stay next May for the Highland Whisky Festival. 8 distilleries this year took part with exclusive tastings, tours and events. And we have The Singleton of Glen Ord just 15 mins away. And ...GlenWyvis Distillery just up the road, the first sustainable community-owned distillery!
Or April 2020 for the Inverness Whisky and Gin Festival at Bogbain Farm.
So, I’ll raise a dram tonight! Who will be joining me?

We still can't quite believe that we've had 2 engagements at Pinewood Steading since we opened, and now we are looking forward to hosting a honeymoon couple! We really will have to push the boat out and make their stay even more extra special! We're so happy we can share these wonderful photos from one of our guests that got engaged - we think the dog was happy too! 😍💑🍾🥂

"More than just a Highland Holiday" is our 'slogan'. We try to make your precious holiday as special as can be. Whether you want to know the best time to see the dolphins at Chanonry Point. Or help booking a local craft experience like basket weaving or flower arranging. Wanting help finding the best company to go kayaking with. Or some local insider information on the best walks. Somebody to check in on your dog if you pop out for a meal, or to arrange a doggy sitter for the... day. To provide you with doggy towels, bowls, leads, food, collars in case you forget yours. And provide oils, spices, herbs, tea, coffee, sugar, dishwasher tabs, loo rolls, washing up liquid and the rest - to save you packing it all. A wee welcome hamper with locally produced and sourced goodies or veg from our own garden to kick start your holiday.
All this and more. Service with a smile. We go the extra mile to provide you with a personal touch.

Yesterday we took a walk up Meall Mor to see what Ben Wyvis looks like from the other side! From our garden, it looks like a nice, rounded, flat topped mountain. But from the other it looks like a craggy, unfriendly, mean and moody Ben! We braved winds almost 50mph at the summit, got close up and personal to some wind turbines, and had a jolly walk by Loch Glass on the way back. 12 miles covered. Oh, and no other people.

Is it May?? It's been snowing almost all day today and coming down pretty heavy now. Think it needs a night in, cosied up by the fire and a good movie. Think this was me earlier today when I had to go to Kirkhill to do my stint at the Community Cafe. What's the weather like with you?
Happy Friday!
