About Porter & Rye

Aged Meat and Wild Food

1131 Argyle Street, Glasgow.

Porter & Rye Description

Porter & Rye: fine dry-aged meats & classic mixed drinks. Molecular cooking & small plate dining.

Porter & Rye aim to serve Glasgow's discerning dining community with carefully-sourced ingredients chosen, wherever possible, from the breadth of Scotland's larder at our restaurant, located at 1131 Argyle Street .

Our beef - award-winning Scottish cattle raised on a pure and natural diet - is sourced from one of Scotland’s leading beef farms: the Brown family-owned and run Gaindykehead Farm, near Airdrie. Our butcher, Tom Rodger; a fifth generation member of the long-serving family of Glasgow craft butchers; dry-ages the sides of beef chosen – from rump to rib-eye - for a short period on our behalf, prior to the dry-ageing process being completed in-house. The hand-dived scallops on our menu are caught in the waters surrounding the Isle of Mull. The mackerel is landed at the quayside in the Peterhead before it's journey via a traditional smokehouse to the plate. Our venison hails from Perthshire, where it us hung until it achieves the peak of tenderness and, as you would expect, the tomatoes in our open kitchen were plucked from the vine in the Clyde Valley.

Of course, our attention to detail in the kitchen will also be complemented by the selection of wines offered and the skills in mixology that will be exhibited at our bar.

We look forward to welcoming you to Porter & Rye, 1131 Argyle Street, Glasgow very soon.

What goodies lie in the ageing cabinet?
All of our beef is sourced locally from the Brown family at Gaindykehead farm and prepared at Tom Rodgers Butchers on Byres Road.
Every steak we serve up spends at least 55 days dry-ageing to ensure you get the most tender and flavoursome cut.
... If this sounds up your street, get in touch.

S'Bagliato...Campari, Cocchi Torino, Peach bitters topped with prosecco. Sbagliato means “messed up” or “mistaken” in Italian and while the Negroni Sbagliato is said to be the result of a busy bartender mistakenly using sparkling wine instead of gin in a Negroni, we think it turned out to be a pretty happy accident.

That is one mighty fine steak if we do say so ourselves... Why not swing by after work and tuck in?!

User

What can I say...on a crisp Autumn evening we arrived and the warmth of welcome delivered us from the cool of the evening. Without even mentioning it directly, the staff overheard it was my birthday and got our evening started with free bubbles (am won over already!). The menu delivered every flavour and taste it suggested and our plates were cleaned and dispatched to the kitchen. Now, I tend not to do "pudding" but am glad I deviated from my not so iron will and indulged. Haven't eaten anything involving chocolate and salted caramel that hit the spot in such a fashion!...Coffees and carriages pulled us home but not without great discussions on how fabulous it was and how soon we plan to return. Tips!...bring your appetite along with good company. Thanks to my "Chinas' I had both in great abundance...thank you, ladies, for a great night.

User

We arrived early but that wasn’t a problem we were shown right to our table. The service from all the staff was exceptional. They were very friendly & knowledgable about everything on the menu. The food was superb not a single morsal was left on our plates. The drinks were delicious & a great selection of cocktails. Will definitely be back.

User

Tremendous fillet steaks. The bone marrow mac & cheese is the best I’ve ever tasted. The only thing I would suggest is cooking the beef dripping chips a bit longer as mines weren’t soft on the inside they were slightly hard, but only slightly and I still rate it 5 stars. I’d give 10 if I could. Worth every penny

User

There aren't enough words to say how excellent our meal was at Porter and Rye, when a meal makes you smile when you eat you know its good! Staff, especially Liam, were excellent, mannerly, informative and very friendly. Added bonus, cocktails are fab too! Can't wait for our next visit.

User

Service first class followed by delisious food and a medium steak done to oerfection

User

Perfect food but one rude condescending server spoiled everything. Don't like being interrogated over a gift voucher present. Would have been a regular place for me and husband but its not all about the food. Will not be back.

User

My wife and I dropped in for a late lunch on Mon 09/07 and had a great time. The food was fantastic, the waitress was helpful and attentive (and funny) and the venue / decor was modern and stylish. The food was cooked well, the portion sizes good and the wait time between courses was minimal. Hats off to the chef, who intentionally or not, was a highlight with his dry cutting wit and running commentary in the kitchen, my wife and I couldn't help smiling through lunch. Worth every £ and highly recommended

User

Janice Lennox This has to be one of the best Sunday roasts I have ever had , I will definitely be back

User

I enjoyed an excellent Sunday lunch with my brother who had been previously. We did not have a starter, main was Sunday roast, meat melts in your mouth, Yorkshire pud and veg no complaints, dessert was, for both of us, buttermilk pannacotta with pear sorbet and ginger biscuit, I thought “to die for” I don’t normally eat custard type desserts but I could have easily eaten another. When back in Glasgow (my home town) I will certainly go back to Porter & Rye.

User

Had chateaubriand which was cooked to perfection. Nice selection of sides including savoy cabbage with pancetta and the pheasant rillette as a starter was absolutely superb. Service excellent and unobtrusive. Will definitely be back.

User

Great food, lovely atmosphere and wonderful service from Cal. Couldn't fault the whole experience.

User

Food was amazing and excellent sevice too! Highly recommend to all meat lovers. Only downside was our table was a bit small but we managed fine. Oh and Billy my dog loved the Tbone we brought him home

User

Brilliant place. Great staff great food. Definitely going back. Best steak ever!!

User

Best meal I have had in a long time! Great food, and service. The staff are so lovely and attentive! Can't speak highly enough of this wee gem of a place!

User

Been there twice now, and we simply cannot fault it! The atmosphere is great, the staff are fantastic and the steak is out of this world! All the food is. Love this place!!

User

The food is excellent and I cannot say otherwise, the staff are lovely also. Unfortunately while my wife and I were in a large party arrived and we were forgotten about...25 mins to clear mains.

The waitress was very apologetic and did give us a discount on the meal, I realised on the way home that we had actually been overcharged by more than our discount...but really that is as much my own fault for not checking at the time.

Unfortunately the wait made us choose to not have dessert and really took the shine off.

User

3rd or 4th time I've been and although it was top notch it's gone down hill. They asked us to take a later booking on the night, now only half hour later but not a good start. Then it took 3 hours to finish the meal as the service was so slow & tiny steaks and I mean tiny and my friend also had to send back his Mac and cheese that had......no cheese just plain boiled macaroni and allegedly some marrow. It went back 3 times and in the end it still wasn't great. They did give us free deserts but the only excuse we got was they had a new head chef. Well sorry but that doesn't excuse the service we got for a £60 plus per head meal. As I said I've had some amazing meals here but this wasn't one of them.

User

This uninventive, tasteless food didn’t help us forget about the pretentious and rude staff. There are many better places around

User

Disappointing!!!

We were on a deal, but it was still a £10 supplement each for the ribeye steak and it was average at best. We also asked for one of the slightly larger tables, but the girl said she had to check they didn’t have a booking for 4, although the table was clearly set for 2!!!

Wouldn’t rush back
