Portobello Promenade And Beach Description

From: BeachBoyBloke:

Portobello Promenade Facebook page is a place to post information about anything that's happening on our wonderful, busy, lively thoroughfare and beach here in Porty. Larger more formal events usually need council approval, but smaller non-commercial gatherings and meetings are of course more or less unrestricted.

Whatever your event, post it here if you want people to hear of it.

Please note this is an open page and anyone can post, including businesses and community groups. The photographs are all mine and copyrighted. This page is not a business and has no address or phone number.

Mindful that we have had several examples of people getting "in trouble" around the country of late and following the spectacular activities of the Coastguard and RNLI working together on Sunday, Promenaders and Beach users should always wear appropriate clothing and carry suitable equipment when enjoying the water.
The Royal Yachting Association have just issued a reminder of the "Gold Standard" advice for boaters (see below) and it's worth a read if you venture out beyond the surf. At the very least, ANY would be mariners should wear a buoyancy aid, no matter what. The prevailing wind in these parts is from the southwest, so often, it's next stop Crail!

Glad to be able to say this evening's kerfuffle on the Beach was a false alarm.

Every year, we have the Big Beach Busk on Porty Prom. It's a fantastic event and attracts huge numbers of musicians and visitors.
Now busking is being banned from the Mound in the city centre. Sign here to say no that daft idea!

Bike Found!
Twas on the prom at midnight (Friday) ..... I found a child's bicycle leaning against the prom wall. I was clearly abandoned so I have squirrelled it away in a safe place hoping its owner will claim it.
If it's yours, msg me on here.

Eventide.... with spoots.

Plastic bottles - It's as simple as this. Well done Iceland!

User

Great news for Portobello. Well done to Action Porty who have gone the distance - a long distance.

User

Meanwhile, down the prom, we have the Beach Volleyball tournament!

In recent times King's Place, at the foot of King's Road has become a general car and caravan park, to the dissatisfaction of residents and visitors alike.
Thankfully, the City of Edinburgh Council has proposed the remedy of limiting parking to three hours and the community council has published details here - http://www.portobellocc.org/ŌĆ”/2018/05/1 8_38%20new%20plan.pdf
Hopefully, this will resolve the matter.

There was a nice cafe at the foot of Kings Road called "The Tide". It has changed hands and at first it seemed to have lost something. However, I went in today and was very impressed with all aspects of the cafe after its recent extensive refurbishment. "Dream and Season" has the best cake I've had in ages, the tea was great and the service was excellent.

Come sail with us.....

User

Would you like to learn to sail at one of the two local sailing clubs, Portobello Sailing and Kayaking Club and Fisherrow Yacht Club? And it's not just sailing! Rowing and kayaking feature at Portobello and rowing at Fisherrow is through Eskmuthe Coastal Rowing Club.
Why not pop down and get a free taster session? Fisherrow will be giving sailing tasters on the afternoon of Sunday 13th May and Portobello on Saturday 26th May.
Their websites are at www,pskc.org.uk and www.fisherrowyachtclub.com and both are on facebook. Both clubs are open to all and are very good value. Go on - give it whirl! You know you want to!

User

If you don't get down to Porty Beach early, you may wonder how it gets cleaned as quickly as it does......

User

A new fashion in Promenade gates and doors?

User

Today is a big day for Coastal Rowing as Eastern Amateur Coastal Rowing Club host the first event in the SCRA Youth Regatta Series.
Hop down and see this excellent event!

We wanted to stop off at a beach in the way back from Edinburgh and found portobello beach. This is a little hidden gem a beautiful promenade suitable for all, pushchairs and wheelchairs included. The beach was clean the small but quaint amusement arcade served its purpose and the coffee shops and cafes were beautiful.

We had a nice meal in Miros before heading back which was deliciously home cooked foods with a good selection to order from.

We will visit again

User

We may not have had the weather yesterday but the kids stripped down to their swimmers and ran into the sea anyway. The girls then covered themselves to their middle in sand whilst our lil man found a disguarded frisbee for some fun times and photo opportunities. Mum and I had a chat and a latte and hot chocolate from the wee van there. On a better day, we would definatly leave earlier and return later to home Family fun for me and my good friend and our kids x.

Took a trip down memory lane yesterday, my family are visiting from Australia, we spent many a summer in Portobello open air pool, happy days ¤śŖ

Most dog owners i know pick up their dog waste. It is the irresponsible ones that don't.

User

Love this beach we visit regularly when weather is good the kids love it, it's our go to place for making smores and some amazing places to eat all in one place

User

Love porty beach ŌØż’ĖÅ

Regularly go with my little girl and dog ;) especially on beautiful nights it's just breathtaking -- my wee one loves it so much she even likes to go litter picking there -( litter pickers are available at libraries ) - shame not everyone takes responsibility for their own mess Lots of tissues/nappies and food n drink containers left lying about ...

I was first brought to Portobello beach in the mid 1960's when i was a lad. Grandad & Grandma lived up the road. Very fond memories. I live in Leeds but love paying a visit. So much has changed though. The outside pool has long since gone. The only thing i remember are the sea wall which i fell over once and the baths.

Happy happy days ’┐Į

User

I very like. It so nice place very close Edinburgh. The beach has sun and promenade has so good stores many. I had coffee with dog with beach. It so relax. I you go Edinburgh this so nice place to see.

User

I used to live on Portobello high street, give great memories, as I move to Dunfermline 18yrs ago , great to walk along the prom brings it all back ’┐Į

User

I think it is spotless great for the lids and big kiddies

User

Fantastic couple of hours spent yesterday with our boys in the water, beach itself was nice and clean, only think was quite a lot of dogs off their leads didn't bother us but could bother other people x

User

The beach is much improved, and great choices of cafes etc. But could still be improved upon, with an upgrade on kids play areas.

User

Really enjoyed our day at the seaside, the weather really made it.

My one complaint is during high summer season there should be an area for either no dogs or dogs must be on leads. I've a child scared of dogs jumping up on her, what makes dog owners find it acceptable to let their dog jump up on a strangers child? Also covering their dogs poop with sand instead of clearing it up is unacceptable. This is the only thing that spoilt a perfect day.

User

Plenty of pavement space to walk, jog or ride your bikes (inc kids and dogs), clean and litter free beach. Great scenery, with views of Fife, Portobello, Seaton Sands and Berwick in the distance. Lots to see, enjoy.

User

Nice beach lovely if you fancy a walk and paddle in the water. Nice coffee too

User

I love this place as I grew up near here. Very disappointed that the toilets at the Joppa end are closed. We normally park here because of the lack of parking elsewhere. We travel 30 miles to get here and it's a long walk to the toilets which are not great!

User

I love portobello went there as a child when I lived in Edinburgh.

Now we take our grandchildren there.I think there are far to many dogs off the lead and poop outside the cafe on the promenade where if they were on a lead they would see there dog had pooped and pick it up but then again some don't care .

Such a shame

Will still visit though .

User

Great day out with grandkids. Just wish people would lift there rubbish and drop it in bins provided. Would have been nice if the family next to us had done that with the dirty nappy they left!!

User

Great beach but it's spoiled by the dogs off-lead and leaving their deposits behind. The beaches should have a dog-friendly area towards the Western end and dog-free in the central promenade area. Better for hygiene and safety and should cut down on the barking disturbing the peace as well. It really spoils an otherwise great place.
