About Priority Areas

Our focus is on the work of the Priority Areas Committee. We work alongside faith communities tackling poverty in the poorest neighbourhoods in Scotland.

Priority Areas Description

Priority Areas is responsible for the support, development and coordination of the Church of Scotland's work within its poorest 64 communities.
Our vision is a reinvigorated and sustainable worshiping people and community life in all 64 priority area parishes.
We strive for this by placing priority for the poorest and the most marginalised; a Gospel imperative facing the whole Church, not just the Church in the poorest places.

The Church of Scotland and 19 other church leaders from across the UK have urged the Home Secretary to put an end to the hostile environment. In an open letter to Sajid Javid, signed by Rev Dr Richard Frazer, convener of the Kirk’s Church and Society Council, they argue that destitution deliberately inflicted by the UK Government is “inhumane” and leads to racial discrimination.

Funding possibilities from Creative Scotland - especially the new Film Festivals' Fund could be of interest as it will support local community film festivals...

Bags of Help (Tesco) funding possibility... of interest?

People in Glasgow have been shocked over the last few weeks by the actions taken against our friends and neighbours who have fled from violence, terror and war. The last few days have seen Serco announcing they will serve eviction notices on over 300 people while Springburn Parish Church and Possilpark Parish Church have been leading campaigns to stop deportations of families in their communities.
While there are some cases getting high profile attention we know there are als...o lots of people out there who don't know where to turn. If you know anyone who may be at risk then here is some advice from a local councillor which can be shared.
Advice to people immediately at risk: - tell your lawyer and don't sign anything from Serco without legal advice - take photos of all your possessions - make copies or take photos of any documents you can't afford to lose - get in touch with your MP immediately with your address and contact details
For support with any issues then three places you can go to for advice or who can help access appropriate support are: - Govan Community Project (open to everyone, not just those in Govan) - Scottish Refugee Council - British Red Cross
Great resource to help understand the whole system https://righttoremain.org.uk/toolkit/

We are looking to put together a team to plan and lead worship at the Big Conversation on 6th and 7th November and would love to hear about people who might be interested in getting involved. As well as attending the Big Conversation it will involve meeting a few times between September and November.
This opportunity is open to anyone from Priority Area congregations and the aim is to have a mix of different gifts and experiences. It could be musicians, poets, artists or pray...-ers. It could be ministers, worship leaders, or someone who normally sits in the back pew. It could be people who bring lots of experience or those looking to learn something new.
If you are interested (or know someone who might be) then please get in touch with Iain McLarty via email or send us a message here by Friday 10th August. Let us know why you would like to be involved and what skills you would bring or are interested in developing. We will get back in touch with everyone to continue conversations around worship development even if it’s not possible to include you in the team for this event.

How do we disciple people well and get them excited & engaged about it? Come and explore this question and others with the folks from Cairn, bring a team of up to 6 and be ready to reflect on how you are investing in new leaders in your congregation. Includes input from a fivefold ministry perspective.
